Shooting competitions are my second hobby. For a couple of decades I have competed in Olympic style fencing, both Foil and Epee competitions. This past weekend I Competed in the NC Fencing Divisionals in both the Division 2/ Division 3 Mens Foil and Epee qualifiers to the 2017 US Fencing Nationals to be held in Salt Lake City, Utah.

In the Foil event, things did not go so well. The second day (which I was more focused on) went much better. I earned first place in the event, qualifying me to compete in the Div 2, Div 3, and Vet 40 Mens Epee competitions at the 2017 US Fencing Nationals. I am the fencer in the black jacket in the photo, with the second and third place finishers standing in the photo with me.

Just an added note, My two competitors ages added together don't add up to mine.

Congratulations, Blueridge! Making the Nationals is quite an accomplishment!

Stick it to them youngsters!!

Kudos again!

Old age and treachery (I meant experience, really) beats youth. At least I hope so.

Congratulations and go get em at the nationals!

Never too old! Congratulations and nicely done. Please keep us updated on your future matches. Very cool...

Congrats!

Now who do we need to talk to so you guys can wear some better pants?!

Pretty cool stuff. Feels good beating the younger ones. I still beat my 14 year old son at horse most of the time. One on one is getting iffy at this point as he is still growing and taller than me now.

I believe that Toby Keith sang, "I ain't as good as I once was, but I am as good once, as I ever was". :D

(Now I just have to find three more days of that when I compete at the US Fencing Nationals coming up this summer. ;))

This thread is full of awesomeness. I didn't say that because of all the awesome comments however. Lol. It is awesome.

That's pretty cool, congrats and good luck at nationals!

Congratulations
We need to get you a CFF patch for your jacket.

Hey! Those pants (at least mine) are made of ballistic nylon that can resist up to 800 Newtons of force. I sense jealousy...... :p
Good to know. I thought for a minute that you guys had raided a nearby little league supply closet and all they had were teeball pants!

:D

Good information to have if you ever find yourself bound and gagged, smelling of chloroform, in @Chdamn 's basement.

Congratulations! The sport has always fascinated me. Had a roommate in college that took fencing for one semester and trounced me soundly!

The question we are actually thinking:

Think you could take this fellow?

I had not a say in the athletic gear. I just have to abide by the equipment requirements. I wish that I could use baseball pants, as those that I am wearing cost $150-$250. They have lasted twelve years though, so I guess that I cannot really complain too much. :)

Same pants size 12 years later. That might be an even bigger accomplishment!

I finished 14th overall just missing the top 8 losing 14-15 in the round of 16 to the eventual 4th place finisher. I did however manage to earn the silver medal in the Veterans (40+) category, as seen here with me on the podium with the gold and bronze medalist.

Now at least we have someone who could bring a sword to a gun fight and win.

Of course it's alway been my theory that I could disarm most anyone before he was able to draw a gun. (pun intended)

Good luck at the Nationals.

I fenced foil at NCSU, several lifetimes ago. I loved the rules and etiquette for such a dynamic sport. There was a properness to it all. And most people don't know how hard fencers train. I remember the inner edge of the left shoe and the heel of the right shoe were worn from the runners we used.
Interestingly, the skills I learned helped me in a combative knife class many years later, because I was accustomed to facing off one on one with blade in hand.
