Which one would you keep out?

I have an old S&W 640 (38 only) and a 642. Which one would you keep in the safe and which one would you keep in the bedroom as a backup?

Right now the 642 is in the safe. The 640 has a better trigger. The 642 is easier to carry if I decide to carry because of the weight.

If it's just going to lay on the nightstand most of the time I recommend the 88 Magnum. Weight is not a concern for a house gun.

I'll start, first, by saying that it's perfectly fine to rotate the guns...any time you feel like it and for no good reason at all. Hell, I do it all the time and occasionally post the new bedside gun here.

That said, you've picked two guns are almost identical other than composition and weight. Both S&W centennials in .38 Special. It's all the same for home use. Honestly, I don't think that you really have a choice to make unless the plan is to get rid of one completely. In that case, I would lean toward the 642 because it is lighter for carry. You can send the 640 to me.

Prosecutor, I think that I am leaning towards the 640 in the night stand just because of the weight (and Apex trigger) and if my wife has to pull the trigger, the 640 would be a better choice. As JR Green said, the night stand gun can weight a ton it does not matter. My primary nightstand gun is a Glock 30 with 4 or 5 magazine with it.

I was thinking if the house ever got broken into, the 642 is in the safe and the 640 would be gone. I would have a hard time replacing that age 640.

Both are nearly identical, honestly if they were mine I would rotate them around. I have more than a few pistols, and I like to rotate them around both carry and house duty, currently my FNH FNP-9 is doing house duty and the S&W Shield in 45 ACP is the EDC. I like to keep my proficiency up with all my guns, the closest thing I have to a safe queen in my Grandfathers old American Bulldog that fires a rimfire S&W 32 short I have owned it for approximately 40 years and I have never fired it and never will.
