My Uncle in Texas has decided its time to retire form some of his more demanding hobbies and has offered me first choice of his project cars. The first is a 1970 Karmann Ghia coupe ... basically a Texas survivor with no rust and has sat for at least 10 years while he’s been piddling with other projects. My other choice is a 1974 Thing ... another SW rust free car but he’s already done 90% of the body work (media blasted back and sealed as it sits now) but he’s done it with a performance type twist in engine and suspension upgrades.

I haven’t had an air cooled VW since high school but remember I could keep that Bug running with a screwdriver, adjustable wrench and baling wire. I also don’t really want to dump a lot of cash into another project vehicle with my kid’s college looming.

What say you guys?

Karmann!!!!

Or give them both to me....lol

I am biased toward Things. I always wanted one after cutting my teeth on a 73 bus and a 79 diesel Rabbit.

Either one is good but I'd have to go with the Karmann Ghia.

Ghia for sure. The thing might be more fun to barhop with friends and the top down. Esp with a nice engine upgrade and a stinger exhaust for fun

Since he has done a lot of the work already and you don’t want to dump a lot of money into, I vote Thing

The Thing is part 914 ... he has the front end, engine and transmission from a 914 he’s reworked for it.

I would go with the ghia for parts availability. Last time I looked through a vw parts catalog the parts for a thing were limited.

Sounds like the Thing is the more desireable performance-wise, but nothing beats the classic looks of the Ghia! I had a '73, a NE car that was a rust bucket, but it moved... really well.

It was the car that made me a fan of disc brakes -- which it did not have.
