EVERY gun shop & pawn shop in SC plus a few in NC. Called everyone and not a single AR that is both rifle length AND lacks a rail. Been looking for a Colt SP1 or at least an M16A2 clone for years and can never find anything except at shows where everyone thinks their shot out garbage is gold, or tries to pass off single parts as “rare”. Everyone online says just to build clones over the course of years97D86F5A-6B48-4EC1-9C3A-813B91D4CB64.jpeg

You didn't like the SP1 that Don had?

Other than styling, what's the big attraction to an A2 style?

There are 20" Flat Top ARs all over the interwebs. Get you an A2 style detachable handle and call it a day.

I'm not insisting it. You asked why they're so hard to find, and I would propose that it's because it's outdated and abandoned by most branches of our current military for oh, about 30 years. So you are gonna pay for rarity. Even the Marines are now moving to the M4 platform.

I heard Colt was re-introducing the A1 for a rediculous amount of money. Complete with stupid slow twist barrels.

Slightly more expensive than an SP1 for a frankengun that says COLT M16A1 and SAFE SEMI AUTO on it. They weren’t even grey until more recent showings.

For furniture look at us collectors ordnance. They have everything you need.

That's why Colt is doing so well in the market. And financially.
If they wanted money they’d bring back the snake guns and WWI & II 1911s for competitive prices. Thinking they can just sell collector’s garbage and live off non-existent government contracts.

Hey, it's worked for 3 or 4 bankruptcy filings now!

FWIW, I will never own anything Colt. Ever. They are the anathema to the American Dream. Just another government handout entitlement scavenger.

I want the same thing I'm working on a 16 inch barrel version now. It will only take as long as the money to come in. Parts are out there. If you want a 1 in 12 twist barrel at 20 inches that will be that hardest part. There is a company that makes what you want its around 800 for the complete rifle.

I want a Pre-1943 U.S. Army Colt M1911A1
Do you have a modern 1911 currently?
If you’re shooting with a normal powder load 1 in 12 is plenty accurate.
has nothing to do with powder, and everything to do with bullet length (weight also)

1:12 twist is for 50gr or lighter, which is fine for shooting poodles. a 1 in 8 will do it all.

You think I havent tried many times? 1: everyone thinks their garbage is gold. 2: I’m trying to trade the stuff I have in the classifieds.
setup an auto-alert with your price point, and let the dog eat. You'll eventually find one maybe not pristine but those things aren't 'rare', it's probably market fatique from people trying to sell $500 ARs for $1200 with 3 mags, a sling and a bag that they paid $1500 for.

Only way you're gonna do it affordable is build it. Otherwise, Caveat Emptor.

Why would I want some rare thing? I need a shooter

There ya go. You can get into a shooter grade pre-war 1911 for around $1500-1800.

I've just resigned to the fact that there are far too many guns I want before I become a collector of relics. Once M1 Carbines broke the $2000 mark I said Eff it all.
Not pre-war, pre-1943 changes Colt made that made it cheaper and looking like a Remington Rand

You do want a rare thing. The A1s are rare. I found this out. There are only 15 billion ARs out there and 1 million of those are A1s. And half of them are on the sea floor, buried in a ditch in Vietnam or other wise useless. So yes rare. Parts not made new are also rare and so are the ones that are made new. I suggest build. What are you wanting to spend? It won't take long to build it depending on budget.

Does this have everything you want? The only others I know of are made by Windham and PSA; both of those have detachable handles though.

The Colt and FN have been discontinued I think.
I’d still need to swap the barrel for an A2 profile one, swap the forward assist for a big button, refinish everything grey, and swap the dull furniture for glossy A2 furniture.

When did I say I was looking for an M16A1? I want something like a Colt SP1, pre-A1. Also, what’s this about civilian AR-15s in Vietnam?
