Wild looking fella on my back porch this evening.

Had a couple last year. First one, I thought a sparrow sized bird was panicking in the dark on the porch. Flutter flutter THUMP. Flutter flutter fuller thump, slide to the floor, thump. I was like WTH is that? Drove the damned dog nuts trying to catch it.

Just googled them. Pretty interesting to learn that they’re harmless, only live 7-10 days as adult and don’t eat as adults, relying solely on stored reserves during their caterpillar phase.

That’s the same life story as this mated pair I had in my back yard about a month ago. 10 months in the cocoon. I can’t remember the name, but they are the largest in north America.

Used to find a lot of their wings on the ground under our night light. Not sure if they were on the ground and toads got them or if bats snagged them out of the air.

I'll never forget hanging out at my neighbor's house in high school and we kept hearing the bud zapper go off for several seconds at a time over and over again. Went outside to look at what was running into it and it was a big Luna Moth. The bug zapper wouldn't kill it, but the stupid thing wouldn't leave it alone.

Go around streetlights and you'll find their wings on the ground. Bats eat the bodies and the wings fall to the ground
