Looking for opinions ,my father inlaw gave me a win model 1904 .22 manafactured between 1914 and 1919 it is in decent shape with the exception of the stock having been broke and then repaired. And the blueing is worn but in good shape for its age . The rifle was a gift for my son when he gets older so im not worried about the value of the gun but im considering stripping the stock and hiding the repair and then stripping and rebluing all of the metal components so it will look like its just off the factory floor im just looking for opinions as normally i dont like to mess with the originality of things lile this. I attached a pic of another
22 i did that one had 0 factory blueing left and the stock looked like it was drug behind a truck just to give an idea of how the win will look afterwards if i do decide to go this route

It is not particularly collectable since it has some wear. I would say do what you want and not worry. My dad gave me his M34 Remington and I had it reblued. I refinished the stock as well.

Thats what i was thinking . Im also contemplating getting a brass sheet and engraving his name on the brass and doing some scroll work with an engraver i think it would be cool and his initials are W.A.R lol for waylon allen rice so it would be unique

I'd certainly vote the other way.

There are 1,053 reblued Winchester 1904s but only ONE that looks like yours.

It's only original once.

If you can take a broken worn out old rifle and make it look like the one in your photo without having to pay a gunsmith? I say do it, and post a thread about the build!

You did a really nice job of it, you should be proud of that!

I'm an "originalist " on all my hobby stuff , so I wasn't trying to rag on you. I just had an Israeli light barrel FAL reparked, etc, as it was REALLY hammered, so I will do it too (occasionally) but it had quite literally gone through two wars with the Israeli's and who knows how many with the Tanzanians they apparently sold the rifles too when they went to the Galil.

Oh i understand for sure original is best đź‘Ś

Is that a Lyman peep on that rifle in the post?

I love those things. If you fitted the stock to accept that, you did a nice job. Some of the old Winchester .22s I've seen look like they were machined by an angry beaver.

It is a lyman but its the original sight on that paticular gun that one in the pic is a rem 521 with the lyman rear sight and a globe style front sight it shoots amaizing i also have a H&R m165 with the same rear sight
