Anyone else having a bad year for yellow jackets? Wife mowed the yard yesterday and got stung a couple of times on her arm. When I got home, I asked her to show me where it happened in the yard. Found the nest going in beside some old landscape timbers around a flower bed. Got the powdered Sevin out and dumped it on the hole and also got stung on the arm. First nest I have found here in 30 years. No flyers in and out today.

Talked to my cousin who lives about 10 miles away and the guy cutting his grass yesterday, found 8 different yellow jacket nest in his yard. He had a really old bag, about 30 years old, of 50% Sevin and he said it took care of the pests in very short order.

2 weekends ago, we were up at our place in the mountains and I noticed something sticking out the bottom of our breaker box on the service pole. Turns out the yellow jackets had build inside under the cover and was expanding it out the bottom. Couple cans of wasp and hornet spray took care of them. Then I went to put the power cord back into the "hole" in the side of the camper and got covered up with more yellow jackets. Turns out they had built an exposed nest on the bottom of the camper and it was about the size of a cantaloupe. Looked just like a hornets nest but was yellow jackets. Another can of spray and I was able to tear it down and stomp it good. Only got stung on the chest once.

These were the first yellow jacket nest that I have ever seen that were not in the ground. Didn't get a chance to get a pic of the one on the bottom of the camper as I was running away.

Yup

Now that you mention yes. One of my dogs got nailed by some near his doghouse and I’ve noticed them elsewhere around the yard

yes.
usually, we find one nest every year.
so far, this year we have found six.
our neighbor had four in her yard.

Found a nest today with the tractor, got me 6 times.
Beer thirty came early today, and combine that with 3 Benadryl and I'm ready for a nap!

Never seen so many ever. On third of the service calls I’ve been to I have seen or had to kill nest before working. I saw over a dozen at a farm/event location on three buildings alone. Lucky for me they usually keep a case in the barn.

The seven nest around under the deck have been sprayed and are gone. They were hornets and yellow jackets.

Thankfully I haven't found any this year. Normally I get one in our yard or at my mom's every year.

Tip for yellow jackets, The best thing I've found is to take ant killer and mix it in a sprayer then spray on and around the nest. They think the spray is just rain and don't react and it kills the whole nest dead.

And i've seen wasp spray fail on them.

Got popped cutting the grass. Mixed up some strong Bifen in my 1 gallon pump sprayer. Hit the hole with a can of hornet spray then stuck the nozzle in the hole and pumped in a gallon of Bifen. Nothing out of that hole the next day.

Yup, a close friend in Durham mowed over a nest this past week and ended up in the ER. Not sure how many times he got stung but it was a lot! His 1.5yo dog also got stung a bunch but she’s OK.
