Antebellum, Latin for before war

Ante: preposition + acc
Bellum -i, 2nd declension noun, N. (= war) not to be confused with Bellus -a -um an adjective (pretty, handsome, pleasing).

Wanted to start by saying, I never listened to any of their music and have only heard the name of their band from the radio.

So they changed their name to “lady a”, wouldn’t the “a” just be short for antebellum?

Doesn’t seem like they really changed anything, maybe just shortened it up.
 
I would think some of the artists in other popular genres would be in the process of changing lyrics, since many of them include multiple uses of a derogatory word that is a source of pain and hurt for so many.

reckon that don't count, though.

This is what a friend shared on Facebook last night. This sucks for the locals here because this used to be a nice place to go. I remember when it was safe to walk downtown on the Boulevard or the beach and not worry and now it's not safe to be there when the sun goes down.

This is why I don't go to MURDER BEACH any more and I live here. BY RS.

PLEASE SHARE. As many of you know, me, Colin and his family are all in Myrtle Beach for vacation. What started off as a great trip turned into one of the worst experiences of my entire life. 2 nights ago, on our 2 minute walk home from the beach, we were approached by some people asking to borrow a lighter. We told them we didn’t have one and went about our way. They attacked me. Colin tried to defend me, and ELEVEN black men jumped him. It was a short encounter thank god, who knows what more could have happened because they completely removed my shorts from my body. But in that time they managed to do all this to me and break Colin’s jaw in 3 places. He had a 4 hour long surgery yesterday and his jaw is now wired shut until further notice. I’m absolutely sick to my stomach. Bystanders recorded the incident and no one stepped in to help. Even the police refuse to release any information/footage because they don’t want to scare the locals. They are trying to call it a robbery, even though they did not take a single thing from us... If it were a black couple jumped by a group of white men, everyone nationwide would have seen that video.(Rightfully so) JUSTICE SHOULD BE SERVED REGARDLESS but because of the world we live in right now, these men are walking free and no one wants to help us. We are in contact with the Mayor and local news, but I’m afraid that won’t be enough. That same night just a few blocks away, someone was shot and killed. People need to know it is not safe here even though it is advertised as a safe family vacation spot. Thank you to those of you who have reached out already, we appreciate the love and support. It’s going to be a rough road ahead.

Why is any of this allowed to continue?

And people think the US is full of white supremacists, this is absolute proof that there is not a single one anywhere to be found.

I've a co worker headed to MB (he thinks between N & S) with his family today.
 
Guess since everyone stopped paying attention to them years back they figured to virtue signal some publicity for themselves.
 
I had no clue what antebellum meant and am confident the vast majority of others don’t either. But why does “before war” offend the snowflakes?

Dixie Chicks will do it too. I stumbled across their "First release in a decade" a month or two ago, which they advertised as being "in keeping with their general policy of being non-political". It was a thinly veiled angry political screed, it was just plain a crappy song and video, and they have not aged well. I don't think they really have to worry about needing a name anymore.

Maybe this was facetious? But "antebellum" in the USA refers specifically to "the South" in the pre-Civil War (to use one name for it) period.

Nope, never heard the word outside of this musical group, so I’m going off of the previously stated “Antebellum, Latin for before war”.
Even your explanation, which aligns with what I just found on google, doesn’t explain what’s so offensive. It’s a time period. They may not like what happened during that time period, but it’s a reality. Using the name doesn’t glorify it. What’s next? Are you going to erase 18th century and prior history from the books???

I guess I’m too black and white to get this one.
 
I've long known the word means "pre-war". A similar word we all know, parabellum means "prepare for war".

The use of antebellum in the US typically refers to the US prior to the Civil War, but it can refer to the time leading up to any conflict. While I don't listen to that band, I think changing the name is just silly virtue signaling.
