Ruger GP100

I enjoy shooting my 6 inch GP100 as well as several SP101 revolvers but really like my S&W 66-2 and several J-frames much better. We got my mother a Speed Six years ago since she had a hard time shooting my father's Luger. That was a very nice revolver. My nephew has it now.

opinions on better balanced gp100, 4" or 6" I have a 4" sp101 for almost 10 years and carry it a lot outside or in the truck. The gp would be most comparable to an L frame?
Yes comparable to L frame.......... balance in relation to barrel length is a personal preference....

After getting my 4" security six, if the gp100 is anything like it, itll be an excellent revolver. Made to take constant 357 loads, which took a toll on the lighter security six models. Same designer worked with the six series, gp100, sp101, and redhawk.

I own too many revolvers to count, S&W and Rugers. Ruger DAs are the strongest mass produced guns you can buy IMHO. My GP100 is a SS full lug 4", self tuned action with springs and lots of polishing. Also easy to add yoke and endshake shims to really tighten it up. I'll put my DA action up against any - as good as Rugers are built they need a lot of TLC in the polishing department to get rid of machining marks etc. I also have a set of forcing cone reamers and gauges to touch up the transition from cone to rifling.

I also own 4" and 6" 686s for competition use [.38s] but the Ruger is made for over the top magnum handloads. Cannot beat the leaf spring S&W for ultra soft and smooth DA pull but the GP100 can get to very good levels without sacrificing primer strikes.

I have a GP100 as well as a few other Ruger and a few S&W revolvers. I'd say the GP100 is top notch. I'd place it right there along side S&W as far as build quality and reliability, and above S&W for durability.

The Ruger GP100 may be one of the best 357 magnums ever made. The triggers need some work - at minimum I would install a Wolf Spring kit. It is a true workhorse that can take a steady diet of whatever loads you can dream up. Your wrist will give out before the gun does. For the record I love .357 and own revolvers from Colt , S&W and Ruger. The GP-100 with a 4” barrel is a great choice

I fooled around and let the GP100 get away. The .357 Magnum is my favorite revolver cartridge.

One good thing is that Ruger has made a ton of them , keep an eye out. I picked up a Wiley Clapp 3” blued model that I really like
