CMP 1911s, round two

For what its worth, I was at the C&E show today and saw a older 1911 and asked about it, make, price etc...
The guy said flatly that it was a mixed frame and slide and the price was 1600. because it was a CMP weapon.
They were on the farthest left side line, against the wall, as you walk in, about half way up, maybe a little more.
If anyone gets by there, check it out...

From what I understand most of the 1911's coming out of the CMP program are mixmasters, especially those with armory rebuild stamps in them. Supposedly many went through armory overhauls but were not stamped.

Any that are particularly desirable are siphoned off for the CMP auction system. However, I never saw an 'as built' 1911A1 in service in my time with the Army. I ran a small arms inspection and classification shop for a couple years in the late 70s and every 1911A1 that came through was a mix of different maker parts, frames, and slides. What you'll get from the CMP is what was issued up through the early '80s: a mixmaster.

Is there a way to determine approximately when the rebuilds took place. Other than the A 5-78 stamped on mine, which I understand to be that it went through Albany Marine Core Logistics Base armory in 1978. I have a SA for Springfield Armory, but no idea when it took place, and LEAD for Letterkenny in PA, which I assume is the most recent one.

The fellows at the CMP 1911 forum are probably full of useful information on this issue. I'd be surprised if it was reworked later than 1978 but I could be incorrect (and usually am). Letterkenny always dated their M1 rifle rebuilds, whether that carried over to 1911s I can't say. Many 1911s were reworked post WW2 but with so many of them on hand (so many that no service 1911s were procured post WW2, scads were given as FMA to allies and sold to civilians through the DCM and there were still enough to outfit the military services), a large number escaped rework until the drawdown in the late 70s/early 80s. I never had an arsenal or depot recently reworked 1911 pass through my hands while in Germany and we were a turn-in point for 7th Corps. TO&Es were always changing and units would lose authorization for a quantity of small arms (going from 10 to 5 1911s but gaining 5 M16A1s for example) and we would get them returned to us. The pistols were always the usual beat up rattling mixmaster .45s we all loved.

Now CMP is saying if you haven't gotten your RGN by June, then email customer service. Guess I'll wait a little longer before checking in as I still haven't received RGN yet.

Another CMP RGN update:

I found it.

Service Grade $1050. Pistol may exhibit minor pitting and wear on exterior surfaces and friction surfaces. Grips are complete with no cracks. Pistol is in issuable condition. Pistols may contain commercial parts.

Field Grade $950. Pistol may exhibit minor rust, pitting, and wear on exterior surfaces and friction surfaces. Grips are complete with no cracks. Pistol is in issuable condition. Pistols may contain commercial parts.

Rack Grade $850. Pistol will exhibit rust, pitting, and wear on exterior surfaces and friction surfaces. Grips may be incomplete and exhibit cracks. Pistol requires minor work to return to issuable condition but is functional. Pistols may contain commercial parts.

Yet another RGN update. Don't call... don't email... wait until August

I was planning on driving down to the south store to pick up a HRA M-1, the only manufacturer I don't have. Checked the web site and the store has been closed since the first part of March, says they need the employees to help catch up mail orders.

.

I know CMP has not shipped the 22 ammunition I ordered in early February yet.

I ordered some on 2/10 and it's still processing, so you give me hope :)
Yeah, they are running behind but are catching up. Check estore every day and they'll pop up any day now.

Dad and I picked up our Service Grades today. Our numbers were in the 212XX range and our numbers were 1 apart. I fell like I hit the lottery, dad not so much.

I got a 1945 Remington Rand in the 2.4M range with almost all correct parts with a Type 3 RR Slide. The main part that was not original was the barrel and link and came with a Govt Contract replacements.

Dad got a Colt Lower in the 1.6M range with almost all correct parts, but his slide was a TZ Govt Contract replacement and it did have a Colt Govt. contract barrel in it.

Both guns came with an excellent finish and came with the Italian Mec-Gar magazines.

Now to search out for at least a correct magazine for them.

Edit: Will post pictures later today because I know I will be asked.

That's a tough break for your dad. I'd be happy with pretty much anything except those replacement slides. He could probably find an original slide to purchase at least (that's what I'd do). Sucks after spending the coin in the first place but worth it IMO. I think I'm going to go for a rack or field grade to attempt to lessen my chances of getting one of those newer slides.

That sounds like a good plan. Every rack I've seen poisted on the CMP forum was not a replacement. There have been a few reports of Fields with them, but not as many as Service Grades.

I saw on the CMP forum yesterday that it looks like they are out of Service Grades right now and folks are being offered Field and Rack. In the reports I have seen 3 seperate post that folks who are getting Fields are reporting getting Contract Replacment slides. Just wanted to make you are aware in case you aren't following.

After tearing mine down more I found out one of the grips was correct and the right side was a Korean/Vietname era replacement. I lucked up on the CMP forums and found a set of Keyes correct grips and a correct HS barrel for and got them swapped out. I'm keeping all the original parts that came with it to maintain its authenticity as it arrived from the CMP.

Darn, that's disappointing, will probably go for a rack. Guessing about another 2 months before my number is called up.

SCORE! While I never received my random number, I did get the call today and my order for a service grade 1911 was processed today
Glad to hear they have Service Grades again. The last few weeks folks have only been offer Field and Rack.

I was finally able to pick up my 1911 today from my FFL. I have to strip and do a deep-dive on the parts, but overall it's a nice pistol

Late 1943 Remington-Rand frame with an Ithaca slide
late 70's/early 80's replacement barrel
Anniston rebuild from 11-77

Nice one. Was this a Service Grade or Field Grade. Still need to post pictures of mine.

Service grade. I had heard they weren't available any more, but when CMP called, they offered me one, so I took it.

Based on what I have been reading on the CMP forums they keep coming and going. Some days they only have Field and Rack. You got the call on a good day.

Here;s mine, just received this week as I mentioned earlier.

Ithaca slide, Colt frame, High Standard barrel with an excellent bor. Service grade showing holster wear. It was a 'clean and repair' post WW2 at Springfield Armory and has an SA stamp on the right side. Came with a late contract GI magazine.

Shot it today with SWC reloads, perfect functioning and great accuracy!

Got my FG yesterday, no SG's available when I got the call. Remington Rand frame & slide, contract barrel from the 80's, a few small parts replaced but no rearsenal stamps. SN dates to early 1944. Pics once I get it cleaned up and presentable.

Looks like mostly original parts, the hammer, barrel and grip safety look like they've been replaced. Other stuff seems to match up with what's supposed to be on it, at least as far as the Internet says. I'm far from an expert does it seem like it's ever been refinished? Looking forward to running some rounds thru it later this week.

Showed these to my oldest daughter and she said “I don’t really even like guns, but that’s beautiful…I want one of those.”

Looks like they are up to 24,3xx. I'm 24,5xx and the wait is now torture 🥵🥵. Firmly decided on a rack grade and keeping my fingers crossed I don't get a post war slide.
