I have a 1975 Rem 700 in .30-06. It’s in really good shape except the stock has clearly been refinished and looks just about 1-2mm warped. So, the left side of the barrel touches the stock and the right side is free. I now know one reason why I may not be grouping as well as I would expect. Should I just sand it out and float it or should I leave it alone and just grab a replacement stock?

Cheaper to keep her but from personal experience its difficult to hog out and sand out a wooden or fiberglass stock that is touching the barrel in all the wrong places and get it to float. A new stock is no guarantee of a floating fit either.

depending on your budget, you can get a full length aluminum bedded stock from stockys stocks to fit that gun for $200. It’ll make a HUGE difference in groups, vibration and felt recoil.

If you want oem type, Stockys has those also. I turned a blind magazine long action 700 into a detachable box magazine gun with aluminum bedding block and it made a huge difference in my rifle

Stockys has some good inexpensive and EXPENSIVE stocks but some times stuff is still crooked. A barrelled action may be crooked or the bbl threaded and or screwed in crooked and still shoot accurately. Chambers can be reamed crooked too but that does not affect stock fit. I bought a Bell & Carlson stock from Stockys some years back. Short carbine stk for a short carbine rifle. Barrel channel was crooked.

I would go with @Burt Gummer suggestion and pick up a aftermarket that has an aluminum bedding blocks.

And @jimmyjames8 has a valid point, if the rifle is all factory, the action may need to be blueprinted and trued for perfect alignment. Which isn’t that difficult with the right tools.

I appreciate all the input. I think I'll try just sanding the stock a bit to see if I can get it floated. Ultimately it's not the gun I'll be doing crazy long range stuff with and I am deeply in love with the old action and stock and want it to look as original as possible. Just want to get it [more] functional. Not necessarily worried about retaining original value; gonna eventually have to sink some sling mounts too.
