I have a nice lower that I really like and was considering getting stamped for SBR use. If I remember correctly, that lower would also get engraved with the required identifying info for the SBR stamp.

So, once all those legalities have been satisfied, I would technically have a SBR lower with a stock on it.

Could I then swap out different uppers with varying barrel lengths and use that same lower?

Yes, if you Form 1 the lower it will have your or your trust’s info engraved on it as you or your trust would be the new “maker”. It would something like “Joe Smith Charlotte, NC”

Yes, you can use your SBR lower with as many uppers as you wish. There is some debate as to whether you need to maintain the ability to put it back to the way it was registered, i.e. 10.5” 5.56 then you must always have a 10.5” 5.56 barrel. Again, this is debatable and only matters if an AFT agent were to check and actually care.

The lower is one of your options as to where you engrave, but not the only legal place.

And it’s only an SBR when a <16” barrel is attached.

Once you get the approval, you can run any length barrel and/or any caliber you want…with no requirement that you have to be able to return it to the specs on the Form 1.

...and only list one caliber on the form. I listed two because I knew I was going to have two short uppers of different calibers, and got the paperwork sent back after 7 months for correction.
