17HMR or 22 mag for 100 yards and in

Looking for something a little more powerful than my 22LR’s for pest control.

I have a 22 mag JM marlin but it isn’t threaded and the trigger is less than great.

What’s the better option for 100 yard max pest control or does it matter?

I prefer 22mag. More options of rounds and can be found almost anywhere. Plus you can match sidearm with it

.22 mag. I’ve got both and at 100 yards the .22 does a better job. The slightest bit of wind will send the .17hmr off target.

Looking at ballistics, they are within 1-3 lbs of energy at 100 yards... Being most of my shots will be 25-75, and I already have the other 22 mag, i think ill just stick with 22 mag.

Now to find a rifle.

Forsure them 22mag hits a tad bit harder but the 17 Hmr pass it up on out

you can find both on shelves and they’re pretty similar. Look for a good deal on a rifle in either caliber and you should be fine. I’ve always used a 22 mag fwiw and always did well on crows, squirrels, rabbits and such growing up

The Marlin 22mags were really accurate. I'd consider looking into a trigger job and barrel threading.

I own both but if I had to pick only one I'd go with the .22WMR. I like having the option of 30gr to 50gr bullets in a variety of speeds and bullet construction. Another plus is being able to use the same ammo as readily available handguns. A PMR30 and CMR30 make a handy dandy combo. My combo is more old school being a T-Bolt and 4" Rossi revolver.
