19 yr old brings loaded AR onto NCSU campus

…and had a hit list? Was screaming that he was going to kill everyone? Had previously made threats? Was putting on a ski mask and chest rig? Is a convicted felon?

Or did he make a wrong turn? Forget he had it in the car? Etc. aka not a threat to anyone. 🤷‍♂️

Doesn't say much. Was it openly displayed, in a trunk, etc. What's lead to the discovery?

“Do you have anything in the vehicle I should know about?… you don’t mind if I search your vehicle, right?”
I’ll bet $1 consensual search.

Or maybe he was "bragging", "boasting", or "flexing" (aka being a 19 yr old idiot) and someone overheard it.

Adam Mahmoud Sulaiman, 19, charged with felony gun etc. on educational property. Gun was found in a vehicle outside a dorm on campus, according to an arrest warrant. Sulaiman was held at the Wake County Detention Center and released on a $5,000 secured bond.

I guess the authorities could conduct such a search on campus without a warrant if there is "probable cause".
Primer on the automobile exception. As a general rule, the police need a search warrant to search private property. There are many exceptions to the rule. One exception is that a motor vehicle may be searched without a warrant when the police have probable cause to believe that evidence of a crime will be found in the vehicle. The exception dates back to Carroll v. United States, 267 U.S. 132 (1925), a Prohibition-era case in which federal agents conducted a warrantless search of a vehicle driven by liquor traffickers. The Supreme Court ruled that “if the search and seizure without a warrant are made upon probable cause . . . that an automobile or other vehicle contains that which by law is subject to seizure and destruction, the search and seizure are valid,” noting that contraband “concealed in a movable vessel . . . readily could be put out of reach of a search warrant.”

The above is from the UNC School of Government blog.
Like @Jerzsubbie said above, I wonder if he gave consent? and why was it suspected in the first place?

I won't tell you how I know, but I do know for a fact that the words written in the state lawbooks do not physically stop you from taking a rifle onto the umich campus, or walking it cased into a dorm.
There are a few campuses I hear you can just walk right in and out of with a pistol concealed, even though the university doesn't like it. state law allows for certain methods of carry in certain places on campus.

yup, he deserves the $4it storm he is in for being a dumb a$s.
I wouldn't say that he deserves it. i think he should be free to ride around with loaded rifles in plain sight. it's just not smart under our current laws and i do not recommend it.

Yeah, but when you park, put it away...just like you would a wad a cash. Smash and grab is a thing, especially around college campuses.
I reckon I will stick with play stupid games, get stupid prizes.

I was under the impression that the laws in NC were recently changed so that a person could have a gun on campus if it was in a locked vehicle. I also wonder whether any prohibition extends to the city streets that run through a campus.

The first article said he forgot it was in his car and went on campus to workout with friends that’s a dumb move but he shouldn’t have his life destroyed over it I didn’t see anything about showing it off or bragging or any kinds of threats

It is definitely too easy for a person to get jammed up.

I definitely don't have anything against people who are prepared incase things get bad.

In plain sight is dumb to begin with and on school grounds is double dumb.

This is with a handgun with permit (permission slip). It needs to be in a 'container' within the vehicle. This doesn't apply to a long gun.

Not sure about the "city" streets...

A UNC cop I spoke to claimed the vehicle counts as a container as long as it's locked. I always kept an actual lockbox, regardless.

Reminds self not to "cut through" NC/UNC campus trying to beat traffic.

The way the campus is 'spread out' these days, I think you could get 'jammed up' without even knowing you are 'on campus' unless you are a very knowledgeable local.

And I state for the record, I have limited knowledge. Ask my wife, she will confirm.

Hmmm, I travel to UNC-G & W, bc my kids go there. I will have to be more "careful" while on campus....
