Hey all. I recently picked up a Bul Armory Government in 9mm. It came with blacked out front & rears. I'm looking for just a fiber optic front sight (IDPA competition) and would ideally keep the rear as is, I prefer it blacked out. They are Novak cut, front & rear.

I perused Dawson Precision and was immediately overwhelmed by all of the options. I need help pointing me in the right direction. Height, width, style, etc.

Thanks

If I read that correctly, you’re keeping the current rear sight. If so…..

If it is zeroed properly at the moment, you need to replicate the same site height you currently have. If not, use the Dawson calculator.

Width is kind of up to preference, but I like the .105 Dawson fronts.

This shows the difference in Dawson’s ramp vs partridge. I’d just get ramped.

This is the Novak cut front fiber sight they offer.

Dawson will make it about as easy as it will get, although even they make you fish for info. Some very mainstream manufacturers just leave out important dimensions. My advice would be to buy a matched pair of front and rear. Trying to match one new sight to another existing always seems to be trial and error.

You are correct, would like to replace just the front. It was purchased yesterday evening, I'll put some rounds through it on Thursday and confirm zero. Thanks for the links you provided. It helps.

If I remember your thread posts, you like running 1911s in IDPA. What is your opinion on ramped vs patridge sights? It seems like patridge is a better choice, offering better contrast of the fiber optic in the shadow that the patridge provides. Or am I over thinking things?

I have run both. Partridge will snag on stuff, where ramped won’t as much.

That said, I have run partridge because sometimes that was all that was available in the width of front sight blade that I wanted.

As long as your point of impact was where you wanted with the sights that came on it then use a caliper and measure the height, if you like the width measure it also and order accordingly.
Dawson makes great sights

Pistol shot great today. POA/POI was dead on out to 20 yards. I'll order up the appropriate front sight this weekend. Need to get the files out abd put a bevel on the magwell. From the factory, it's almost nonexistent.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I like partridge for all but a dedicated carry gun.
I like narrow as possible for vision, personally I like a fairly narrow rear notch too which sort of offsets that but gains a little accuracy.
I figure height by preferred zero and what's on it. I want the bullets to hit above the sight, you may not.
In the end it's personal preference but Dawson's are excellent.
