2020 gardening thread

Whoa... Must do research now.
Do you have theses under a patio or carport?

Nope, they like full sun but you have to stay on top of watering because the basket will dry out in sun.

We have two, hanging on a pergola on our back deck. We literally harvest tomatoes every day from them.

We happened across them this year. Saw them referenced on a gardening show and then found the baskets already started at Lowe's. I'm going to harvest seeds to save for next year's crop.

You know you picked that type because of the name

Those barrels we got from you have been great for nest boxes and container gardens.

Peppers and squash are doing great in them.

Next year there will be a nice raised bed with deer fence around it in that sunny spot.

Cleaned out the Spinach today.
Was going wild and not much for leaves anymore.

Weeded the strawberries too.

We’ve been a lot luckier than some of ya.
No issues with the zucchini. Covered them with sevin early in growth. Ten neem oil every couple weeks.

Today’s picks.

We’ve got lots of cucumbers, squash and some banana peppers coming in. We have 50 tomato plants and about 40 of them have tomatoes on them. Gonna be busy in a couple weeks. The okra I’ve given up on for the deer. Beans are blooming well. Planted 8 spaghetti squash plants and man are they loaded. Middle of my garden sorta looks like Charlie browns pumpkin patch with all the spaghetti squash laying in it growing. Mom made some bread and butter pickles and some relish the last couple weeks. @Lil D i think is gearing up to make some pickles as well from cucumbers that came in this week.

Just a little Black Krim. Yes, the dog wants it.

We are getting lots of cherry Tomatoes, a few yellow and Cherokee purple tomatoes. The banana peppers are coming in big time, jalapeño are being harvested. Crooked neck squash is about done producing. Potato tops are dying so they are close to harvest time.
Second planting of bush beans, string beans, tomatoes, and cucumbers are coming along nicely.

Picked more squash, zucchini, and banana peppers this evening. Diana is gonna start pickles this week, and she’s gonna pickle the little peppers for me for munching on

I've never grown these before but they are very sweet and man do they produce.

Tumbling Tom variety. Does well in hanging baskets like this. Each plant will produce 200+ tomatos over a growing season.

You grow them from seeds or did you find them somewhere local? I’d like to give them a shot.

Edited: I continued reading and seen you found them at Lowe’s. I’ll keep that in mind for next year.

Lowe's in Pittsboro had a few still in stock last week. We bought another one that was just getting going and gave one of our first two to the inlaws. We had given a bowl of tomatoes to them last week and he fell in love with them.

Got a few ears of silver king off to roast and freeze tonight. My corn has been disappointing to say the least but at least we have something to show.

Slicer tomatoes by the paper grocery sack tonight. Sammichs for dinner! Chopped Romas that had squishy spots for salsa this week...

Got a few peppers for salsa and omelets

Where’s that little devil the corn ear worm? Did you spray or plant Bt seed?

I did neither. It's still fairly early for worms, but I try to plant as early as I can, and attract birds to the garden. My garden is 100% organic, no pesticides other than crop oil and soap

Got some major bugs on the beans. We were working on other stuff the past few days and I thought they just needed water. Picked a few 5 gallon buckets of beans though. 30E6F12C-B62B-4C7A-AEE0-D0FC263007D8.jpeg

I run Bt (larval silk application )or spinosid (foliar moth) applications on my organic corn. Just made second pulling and seeing some worms here and there. First round was couple of weeks back and had less pressure but still had a moth flight and had some every so often as well.

Mexican bean beetles. You can squash those larva. Or dust them with diatomaceous earth if you have it. Also the adults look like orange lady bugs with odd looking spots. Kill them too. Anything not red like a real lady bug, kill it.

We do have some de. How do you apply it to the leaves?

We only have a small raised bed with four tomato plants (lots of little tomatoes on them), and 4 or 5 cucumber plants (wife is already picking cucumbers, though they're mighty small, but as I don't eat them I don't mind), and some basil (which has produced enough for two batches of pesto, which I don't eat, either). I'm waiting for the tomatoes so I can have a burger with a real tomato on it. Oh, also there are a bunch of little pepper plants, just at the two leaf stage now, I don't know what variety but I've never had a pepper I didn't like. I hope they'll provide something before the first frost.

Saw the first SVB this morning. Won't be long til squash and zucs succumb to their evil babies. I generally figure first two weeks of August for their funerals. Bush beans go right in after they are gone. Pick them mid=October for canning.
Edited: She has already laid eggs and the larvae are munching away. Just pulled up 9 plants for the pile.

Giving the neighbors and the birds the rest of the blue berries. Almost 14 gallons in the freezer with the 10 left over from last year. Gonna make another 5 gallons of wine this week. Raspberries are gone, blackberries are coming along.

Finally getting maters. Won't be long til its sauce canning time. I've never seen so many maters on my vines. They will slow now with the 90's temp now.

Okra and peppers woke up finally.

Pole beans got a second wind and I planted another row on the same fences 2 weeks ago.

Cucumbers are putting out real well, especially the Jades. Giving them away now and keeping the pickling variety. Put up 9 quarts of refrigerator pickles last week.

Cutting rhubarb now, ready for some strawberry/rhubarb pies and jelly.

We've been canning squash and cucumber relish a couple times a week. Chicken Lady has put up untold numbers of jelly half pints, I quit counting.

Next things to go in the ground will be carrots, cabbage, Brussels sprouts (yuck), bush beans, and whatever else I can come up with.

Brown butter Brussel sprout risotto made me change my mind on those yuck sprouts!

Chicken Lady pickles them. I run and hide.........:eek::eek::eek:

Same way as she makes dill pickles, not refrigerator pickles. Its just nasty how the dang thing smell.

Quick squirt of alcohol will do the job. Don't let them get out of hand. When you're through picking burn the remnants if allowed in your area.

Where did you get the boot seeds? I've been looking every where.
Red wing sells them. They’re kind expensive though

Another new variety we are growing this year. "Candyland".

Aptly named very sweet. TINY.

Throw them in a salad or saute them whole mixed in with other vegetables.

Tonight i sauteed squash with a handful of these some onion and a chopped poblano pepper. It was pretty damn good.

My sweet peppers just suck this year. Don't know why but it is the worst year ever. Blossom end rot, bacterial spec and sun scald. They never grew any height but are putting out peppers that rarely make it to maturity. Dirt may be worn out so going to build some more large boxes this fall for next year. Jalapenos, banana and anchos are doing a little better. Okra is the same way. I think those cold mornings and the late frost stunted them and they're not recovering. Glad I still have a lot in the freezer from last year.

Peppers are doing best again this year. Time to cut and freeze some.

You food save them and freeze them? Or what’s your method? @Lil D is gonna pickle my little yellow peppers but we’re eventually gonna have a bunch of bell peppers
