First tag this season. Nice 1.5yr old, gonna get some good meat

He actually stood straight up on his hind legs when I shot him and fell over backwards. Never seen that happen before. Double lung and heart shot, 168gr Nosler Ballistic Tip

Dad passed away August 24th. Haven’t really felt the whole hunting thing. Didn’t get any food plots planted, get any corn out, or any kind of preparation at all. Some of my friends have tried to encourage me but I just haven’t been feeling it. Went up to my moms today, she kinda pushed me over the edge to hunt this evening. Got back to my house this evening opened up the safe to get my .308 but right beside it was Dads favorite rifle. A lever action Marlin .45-70 Took Dads rifle and headed to the stand behind my house. Didn’t even make it to the Stand. Thanks Dad!! 146lb 6 point

Your post reads/feels exactly like one of mine the year my best friend-brother in law died. I understand completely. Special night indeed.

Got 3 in the woods and wife pointed out one in the yard when I got back home, so 4 on the season opener evening.

And even though I haven't weighed in on "the other" thread, how about crocks AND socks? LOL!

Because I'm a fat VC from the trailer-park at heart? That and it was hot and my foot hurt where I dropped a round of red oak on it the day before. And they are quiet.

Only got 1 today. But it wasn't for lack of trying! Seemed like if it could go wrong today, it did. Still better than being at work though!

That puts us at 8 for the season. Gunning for 200 this year. Sounds crazy but our recipe for squirrel and dumplings calls for 6 squirrels. It's my favorite meal and would love to be able to eat it year round. I only got 76 last year, but I wasn't trying as hard! LOL!

The wife made the squirrel and dumplings and fried green tomatoes last night. It was AWESOME! (And yes @NKD, I'll send text when we are gonna have it again!)

Didn't get but one this morning. Number 10 for the season.

Then my evening hunt got ruined. I wasn't seeing any squirrels and then this stupid rascal came trotting along and I knew he had molested my hunt. CCI Standard Velocity made short work of him. Most folks would not believe the critters I've managed to kill with CCI SV .22lr. Real world ballistics are hardly ever what folks think.

So no meat harvested this evening. I'll sadly have to settle for steak fillets, puffball mushrooms, onions and butter in tinfoil, and apples and butter and cinnamon in tinfoil on the firebowl. Lookin forward to going back to work on Monday! LOL

How you liking that Bergara? It shoot well?

How you liking that Bergara? It shoot well?

It's not without it's quirks.

Picked it up to be a suppressor host. Looking like maybe February before I can get it out of jail though. Figured I might as well get familiar with it. I like it, I would buy it again. But it's not as "plug and play" as I thought it would be though. I really like the light weight carbon fiber combined with the large flat forearm area of the stock. Makes it easy to hump and easy to prop when I'm shooting from box stands.

And 200 squirrels? Holy Moly!

Squirrel season here is 4.5 months long. Plus, for the first time in my lifetime they have added a spring season for 2023 in NC. I think I can pull it off. I hope. Love eating them and no shortage whatsoever around these parts.

I’ve got the steel version, but have not had a chance to abuse it yet. I’m a trigger snob, so that’s my only immediate upgrade, but have not tested the accuracy enough yet. It‘s better than a stock 10/22, but that is as far as I’ve gotten.

Which one did you or are you going to put in? The one in mine is okay. But it should be better.

I haven’t done anything yet, but my CZ triggers are so much better it hurts. I’m probably thinking a simple 3 or so lb single stage drop in. Nothing crazy for what it is.

Where did you find that squirrel skinning plate?

If you are on the book of Faces you can deal with them direct:

I searched YouTube and saw a video. How much easier is it to use this thing versus just splitting down the back and pulling apart?

Also, have you ever used it to do bigger critters? Coons? Foxes?

Hey next time you use it could you turn on a camera and make a video. 😉
