2024 Gardening Thread

I’m having shoulder/rotator cuff surgery on Tuesday. Any hopes for an any type of planting this year is shot for me. But at least I can come here and see y’all’s gardens. Keep posting guys!
You can get anything out of mine you want.

Sorry to hear that, I know how that is, & can only say there is light at the end of the tunnel. Be Well & stay tuned for more garden experiences we will share with you this season. 😀

Still early but see how fast real-estate gets used up when you can't control yourself LOL 🤪

Two seasons ago it was filled up & yes we had 42 pepper plants. Photo taken when we brought them back in from hardening off when the temps dipped to the low 30s.
Here in the Mountains the weather can be in the 80s for a week & dive into the 30s, so it's better to wait than stunt them from too cold of soil temps.

This picture was taken yesterday & even starting the 64 peppers 2 weeks later than last season, were running out of room. 😀 So we can get 2 More LEDs & grow 100 peppers next season.

Check out this foot tall pepper plant, it's a Pasilla Mixe used for making Mole & salsas. It's a rare Mexican pepper not found in the US.

Were growing 10 Scotch Bonnets this season & must be out our minds. There is a Jamaican Jerk restaurant in town. Hmmm just maybe, peppers for food 😉.

That's it for now, I have been following all of your Grow Logs & am enjoying the adventures.

My stupid mother put the (heirloom from gifted seeds) tomatoes out when it was really windy. Broke the damned stems. Lost em all. Part of me thinks this was planned because now she is going to go buy determinant ones at the store.

Careful young man with thy wicked tongue against thy mother. ;)

They may come back if you leave them.

She already tossed them. 🥺 I was so happy with how nicely they all came up and so quickly. Probably shouldn't have started them quite as early. Now she wants to plant lettuce, spinach, beats, and carrots, and those should have likely been done a couple of weeks ago. But hey, el genio está hablando otra vez.

Don’t plant beats, they won’t do well

Make sure you invest in a cold therapy type machine. Basically a cooler with a pump and a setup that circulates cold water in a loop around your shoulder area. My wife said it made a world of difference in here recovery. If you need anything holler i'm just over here in the Q'

Thanks! Glad you mentioned the cold therapy device. They told me about them and said they were available if I wanted one. Wasn’t sure if it was legit or gimmicky.

We have tomatoes squash cukes jalapenos, cayenne and bells. Also have a bit of arugula. Have been late getting the radishes and lettuce in. Hope it is not too late. Okra goes in the last of this month and the melons in early May.

What else are you guys growing?

Fine by me, I really dislike them anyway. I think my dad is the only one who likes them. I've even had them marinated and cooked in Ethiopian seasoning and they still tasted like dirt.

As usual, I’m behind every year. But there’s a nursery locally that has veggie flats way cheaper than you can get at most places.
Picked up
72 tomatoes
30 pepper plants
6 pickling cucumbers.

I have one bed almost ready for beans. I’ll probably plant my first batch of green beans next week. Then I’ll plant another batch in a month. Starting squash, zucchini, and watermelon seeds this week. I know I’m late, but we have plenty of time. 2 years ago we didn’t plant til the first week of June and the garden did great. Hoping to have one this year as good or better than 2 years ago. I didn’t get to do a full fledged garden last year because of time constraints taking care of my mom. She’s back to normal and in good bean snapping shape now 😉

Haven't taken any recent pics of the blueberries, but they are about 12' tall again and covered with berries. I mowed the orchard this morning and got covered up with dried up blooms. The new bee hives I put out there were not happy when I mowed past them, but only got stung once on the side of the thigh.

2 seasons ago we got 1 last year none, and this year 🤔 well see 30s coming up soon.
I think one of our trees has a few. First year for it. A couple of the trees are 2-3 years old and should be producing. Was having a lot of trouble getting trees to survive and I finally convinced my mother to try planting them in the FALL not spring and so far they have survived. Also used the post hole auger to drill them a nice starter hole when we planted them.

I'm just hoping the damn Japanese beetles ain't so bad this year. I put out traps and get rid of as many as I can but last year they was terrible.

We plant all of our pecans in January just because they don’t start digging down in GA until then. It’s definitely better planting as early as possible while they are dormant and to get some root growth before spring when they start breaking bud and pushing growth from their carbohydrate stores.

a coworker gave me 2 blueberries a few weeks ago, both maybe 18". Kind of late to transplant, so I'm not counting on anything. She also gave me a fig, which seems to have taken pretty well. I got 2 figs in the ground last fall my uncle gave me, only 1 has started rowing new leaves so far. the other one might have given up the ghost of figgy pudding. Then again, it looks like the main "trunk" was rotting back then, but a second branch was trying to come in to replace it. I'll let it be for a while.

Try Spinosad it works on flea beetles & Japanese beetles.

if you have weight restrictions, you might have trouble lifting it...
my wife had one after abdominal surgery. Every morning and night i got to fill it with ice and water for her, then walk it over to the bed. neat little circulating water bath though. very similar to what we used in labs for maintaining animal body temps.

Las season we got a few Asian pears, this year it looks really full.

These are the first Grape buds to break today, last season they got frozen & needed the 2nd buds to pop.

I told my wife i'll have to spend time on squirrel patrol this year. She was saying a few weeks ago how we didn't get any pears growing last year. This year it looks like we may have a whole bunch.
They never really get soft though. You can't just eat them off the tree, so I'm gonna insist she learns some pear pie recipes... if she doesn't I will.

I stew pears all the time just like apples. Then I can eat them like they are while warm or I can use them for pie filling, fritters, biscuit bombs, or any number of thing down the road.

Knee or a muscle in my leg took a shit on me yesterday while I was at chads. Stuck not doing much this weekend because I can hardly walk. Gonna try to spend my down time repotting some of the bigger tomatoes we have and putting them in the little greenhouse until we get the garden ready. Gonna start some squash and zucchini in cups today as well

sounds good to me.
If you slice them thin fresh off the tree, they're still pretty darn good.
I don't know about your stewing... but i did simmer a couple dozen down real good with a lot of sugar, and then add a pile of butter and cinnamon. Nearly made myself sick eating so much.

Our fig did the same thing. It looked like it died last year, but has sprouts coming back up from the base.

Same thing. Great grandma called them stewed apples. I guess cause they stew in the pan with all the sugers and seasonings. I mix some clear cornsyrup with water amd butter for my base then some cinnamon and brown sugar just a touch of sweet paprika. Let the apples, pears or whatever stew awhile on medium/low heat. I like to do my peaches in a cast iron with little butter and cinnamon then I drizzle them with Mike's Hot Honey there delicious

Dr suggested one. Wish that I would have known about those when I had my knee surgeries. It’s been awesome!

We have a similar pear species, pears hard as heck. We canned several quarts one year, delicious!

Keep them watered and you might be surprised. Maybe give them a shot of acidic fertilizer also.

Fire blight has almost killed all my pears, European and Asian. Fire blight and cedar apple rust have taken a toll on my apple trees as well.
