I just did inventory on my ammo stash. When I originally did a "set it and forget it" trajectory, I was all about AK 47, and have ... well, lets just say "abundant" ammo in 7.62x39.
Since then I sold 5 AKs (still have one) and have picked up a couple of AR rifles. I am not as well stocked on ammo there. Right now may not be a great time to pick up a pallet of these, but I do want to buy about a thousand rounds to feel a little better. Wondering what you guys think about the various manufacturers. What about Winchester? I can get a thousand rounds for about 52 cents a round and some PNC for less than that.
I have one source who tells me that Federal is a dollar a round, but I simply am not paying anywhere close to that for ball, especially when I see it advertised around 50 cents a round https://miwallcorp.com/federal-ae-a...rain-full-metal-jacket-100-rounds-brass-case/ . Admittedly this is 55 grain.

What do you guys think and what advice do you have for me? Should I just go cheap and get the cheapo stuff. This is NOT to target practice. This is to be a cache.

Thanks in advance.

Winchester is great ammo. Their brass for reloading is up there with lake city (except I hate removing thousands of crimps)

I shot a bunch of Winchester 69gr BTHP a while back when I didn’t feel like loading for a match

Federal/AE is good But I wouldn’t pay $1 per round either

I’ve had good luck with Winchester. But in truth, I’ve not had “bad” luck with any of the major brands. I have also had good luck with Freedom Munitions. They seem to have pretty good prices and often free shipping over a certain dollar amount. So if I wanted to stock up cheaply and quickly, I’d go with them.

One the lower end of the price spectrum, I have had excellent luck with Igman .223.

Middle of the road, if you can find it, I really like Sellier & Bellot. Have never had a bad round of it (always shot the green box), and won my class in a number of 200 yd service rifle matches with it many moons ago.

Another one to consider is PMC X-TAC. I’ve had good luck with both the 55gr and 62gr green tip. Both can be had around .41 cents a round.

So, what is the cheapest you can remember buying .223/556 ammo in the last.... say.... 5 years?

Thanks. I am looking at PMC at that price right now. Don't know much about it, but then, I don't know much about LOTS of things! :)

OTD, during the crazy “Walmart is dumping ammo” event…

Remington 223 @ 15 cpr
Federal 556 @ 21 cpr.

I may have gotten in on that craze... Wow what a score.

I got lucky and found a bunch of the 420 rd cans on stripper clips for $62.95.

decent price here

My "when the ballon goes up" ammo is IMI 77 grain. PMC Bronze is good for shooting and then reloading. No crimped primers. I have a stash of 62 gr green tip and 55 gr military ball that is good to good as well but not for reloading.

If you are planning to get some to stash look at IMI. You can get some decent deals from SGAmmo and even Midway. It's military grade (annealed and sealed) and should be able to get it for around .55 - .60 a round.

OK, now that I have all you guys on record bragging about your deals, why don't you share some of that with me? I will give you 30 cents a round!

Just kidding.

I am just asking because I want to know what the tide marks (incoming and receding) are. 42 cents for PMC doesn't sound bad to me.

Thank you guys for the info. This forum is the best!!!

another vote for PMC X-Tac for the price and quality balance.
For what ever reason...my rifles group much better and more consistently with the 55 gr.
Keep an eye out on ammo seek. I am currently seeing it at around .42 per round at the quantity you are looking for.

Don't rule out wolf gold. I've shot thousands of rounds without issue

I would stay away from it if you’re a suppressor user. Seen some really nasty flame cutting/erosion from that stuff
