I only have one bolt action rifle (Ruger American 7.62x39) and I really love it. Haven’t bought anything in awhile and came across this:

I know little about these rifles other than these are entry model. Good buy? From what I’ve read this is a good hunting round for anything below Elk.

If you already have a ruger american and feel comfortable with it and enjoy it, you may want to try the .270 in the same gun

I recommend the Ruger American over the Remington 700 ADL. For the about the same money you get better features on the Ruger. And with the plastic stock ADL it’s a blind box magazine, pain to unload and the barrel is not free floated. Best thing to do it dump the factor and get a good aftermarket stock.

Thanks all for the input, kinda what I was thinking but wanted to check with others that know more.

Hunting rifles are one of the few things that aren’t super inflated right now.

I couldnt be happier with mine....a friend of mine bought a franchi in a .270 recently.... we sighted it in a few weeks ago and it grouped really well and felt really good.
dont know how the .270 will do in a ruger american but if its anything like the 6.5 creedmoor I have....It will shoot awsome 👍

Jack O’Connor loved the 270, killed moose to rock chucks and all in between...if it wasn’t for the 30’06 I dare to say it be more popular than it is now.

I was talking with my Dad about my desire to get a rifle in this caliber and he told me my Pa-Paw had a Remington he killed woodchucks with.

He thinks my uncle has it, I’m sure he isn’t using it or probably sold it, would really love to have it.

This is the same uncle who took my Grammie’s engagement ring (that I was willing to buy) and gave it to who his wife to appease his cheating, she promptly left once the estate was settled and she got her cut.

I was planning on giving it to my wife. I wear her Grandfather’s wedding ring he gave his wife after WW2. My wife and I just celebrated 10 years together last week. The ring thing still burns me.

.270 is the caliber for distance hunting as far as I'm concerned. Every bit as much boom as a 30-06 but a flatter shooting bullet and just a little less recoil. 130gr for deer, 150 if you're going bear or elk. I just have a Savage Axis but I hit the same hole in the middle of the bullseye at 100yds off a bipod, wouldn't trade it.

I have killed a bunch of deer with my weatherby .270. I haven't had a deer take a single step after getting hit. They all just flop over dead.

I have used 130 gr interlocks, 150 gr partitions and 150 gr accubonds. The 150 gr accubonds shoot .5 moa in my rifle, the partitions and interlocks are about 1 moa.

The only issue I've ever heard about regarding 270 was from friends that shot ballistic tips at deer inside 70 yards.

I've gotten poor performance out of ballistic tips under 100 yards with a .308. The first time I thought maybe it was just a bad hit and that is why the bullet did exit, a very poor blood trail. The second time, same issues as before and that was the last time I have used a ballistic tip for hunting.

Is it going too fast? Not sure what else would change at the 100 yard mark?

That's the only thing I can think of. These guys had been hunting for a long time and had no issues at longer ranges with BT. Just the short range shots had issues; no exit wound, deer running off, sparse blood trail, etc. It's been a while so I don't remember where the shot placement was.

There's so many other bullet options I have avoided BTs just in case. I've had a few bucks pop out at short distances that I'd hate to lose.

@BigWaylon I know they were designed for rapid expansion. I stated under 100 yards, simply because I cannot remember the exact distance. I would bet both shots were closer to 50 yards. My experiences do lead me to believe with the higher velocity at close range does hurt the bullet's performance. They may have improved their design over the years, however, I just can't bring myself to try them after almost losing two deer.

Interesting on the ballistic tips, I would assume this would translate in a HD scenario?
Below are Federal's ballistic gel test using .223 ballistic tip ammo. I will add the link so you can look at the pictures of the gel and bullet fragments. The expansion caused it to lose a tremendous about of mass and .223 doesn't have that much mass anyway.

T223F TRU 223 - 55 Gr. Ballistic Tip Bullet Weight: 55 Gr. Velocity: 2845 FPS
Penetration: 11.50"
Expansion: .227"
Retained Wt: 10.0
Percent Wt. Retained: 18.18%
