30 super

My understanding is that the COAL is basically the maximum allowed 9x19 length. People on p-f were pointing out that a 50K PSI cartridge + bullet setback due to nightly ejecting + feeding in a carry gun could be a recipe for disaster.

No one is going to make a junky load in this caliber, it's going to be all boutique loadings, self defense and maybe some 'train and defend' matched sets or something but everything should be nicely crimped. Maybe they went with a cannelured bullet or something, I mean when you're starting new, go all out.

50K.... I figured between the bullet weight in that cal, and the velocity, that it would be high pressure... perhaps it has an internally steped case to prevent setback?

It would make sense if they thought it out for such possibilities.

It also makes me wonder what it could do in a larger frame pistol, long loaded...

Neat, but meh. For my tastes, if I get a hankering for a .30 cal pistol, I'll just get a Ruger Blackhawk in .30 Carbine.

...loudest pistol on earth, until the AR pistol in 5.56!

Does nothing better than 9mm.

Won't fit into guns that chamber 380.

Won't be adopted by .mil or any agency, which means it will always cost more than every other service caliber.

Eta: This has 45 GAP written all over it.

That was my thinking as well. It's smaller in diameter but 9mm in length, and runs at 50k PSI vs. 32k for 9mm and 24k for 380 (vaguely recalling those are close numbers for 9/380). So if your LCP sized 380s could deal with a longer round and significantly more pressure... why would they not have a 9mm version already?

Maybe the larger 380s (bersa, G42, etc) could adapt since they're already 9mm sized.

This might make a nice SBR / sub gun round. I wonder how it will do shooting through auto glass and doors?
This is my thinking as well. If using a copper solid projectile I'd think these are barrier blind.

All this talk of 30 cal makes me want to drag this out of the safe

In my inbox this morning:

Hm. That article seems to indicate the purpose of 30 Super Duper Elite +P is to generate a new revenue stream for Nighthawk.

Not bashing them; they have a fine, fine lineup and reputation! But the article gets your attention by mentioning the new caliber, then jumps to a paean to the company and its SuperSmiths.

I see no reason why someone shouldn't bring a new caliber to market. But this one seems like a hyped up niche caliber.

Not so different from the Belgian VBR cartridge. They put the 7.92x24 (really similar size and performance with projectiles we can't have in the US) in Glocks and in SMGs

The Nighthawk thing kinda confuses me. Imagine if SAAMI released a standard for .380 +P. Would people be rushing out to buy $4,000 custom 1911s chambered in it? Doubtful, so why is .30SC different (besides the miniscule capacity increase in a single stack 1911)?

I think that's part of the marketing hype.

A Timex tells time pretty reliably. But would your debutant want to be seen with you in one? When you pull the trigger on a 30 Super Nighthawk custom, it goes GLAM! GLAM! GLAM!

lol 50k chamber pressure and same recoil as 9mm

New cartridges are like new fishing lures..Not produced to catch fish but rather more to catch ‘fishermen’! So much marketing involves complicated solutions to non-existing problems.
Ron Popiel’s RONCO was a cottage industry in the 50’s 60’s devoted to such shenanigans….P.T, Barnum was right!

...... still curious what you could do with this with long loads in a large frame pistol. Get it out to 10mm OAL, 50k is alot of potential omph...

I like the idea of something like a shield plus with a couple extra rounds, and a little extra umph over .380 acp.

I could be in for this at some point.
