Any particular projectile weight in mind?
Should mention I’m setting up with a 1:7 twist and 10.3 lengthAny particular projectile weight in mind?
This is precisely what I load Speer TNT 125gr for. You can get the bullets for 11-17c depending on when/where/how you buy and I can get over 1800fps out of an 8.5”. I’ll know 10.5” velocity in a few months once I finish the build. Ballistic gel tests show this round performs OK but not as good as 110gr defensive rounds, which I think is to be expected.Anybody have a tried and true .300 recipe they care to share? Looking to dial in a general purpose hog and range load, unsuppressed.

Previously I was losing 147fmj but you can get the TNT’s for the same price+\-.
125gr HP Speer TNT
18.4gr H110
S&B SRP
2.085" OAL
Very light crimp
Avg 1840fps @ 8.5” BA barrel
I’m running a very similar recipe as jerzsubbie,
Hornady 125g SST and I just started using the Speer 225g TNT for cost, 18.3g H110, 2.960” COAL, 2065fps in a 10.5” barrel. I’m doing a firm Lee crimp.
I was surprised as the velocity jumps with only 0.3g of H110. From 17.7 to 18.3 each 0.3g produced an additional 100 fps. The Hodgen on line manual says 18.5g is a max load.
I’m 90% sure that was a typo, he meant 125gr. A 225gr load would be around 9.0gr.Thanks! Looks to be an appreciable difference due to additional barrel length. What kind of range can you get out of the 225g before seeing noticeable drop off
Correct, I fat fingered the #'s on my phone.I edited the post. Thanks! Looks to be an appreciable difference due to additional barrel length. What kind of range can you get out of the 225g before seeing noticeable drop off

I do enjoy shooting 208g Hornady Amax subs for fun every once in a while.
With the 125's I've dialed in my Aimpoint at 75 yards and only hold up a 1-2" at 175 yards.
19.7 grains of H110 and Barnes tac tx 110 gr has been my hog/deer killer.
I got a 6pt buck this year with a Hornady 125 SST ~17.5g of H110 (a manual I'd used showed a 17.5g max).thanks for the correction, that’s not bad at all in terms of hold off for 100 yds difference for .300, may have to give this one a try. Any terminal ballistic opinions on the 125s on live targets or are you target and range shooting primarily?

Double lung heart shot at 75 yards, he did a very high (10'12') vertical leap with a 1/2 twist, blood spraying like a kid playing with a garden hose, bound 3 times and piled up. I'm now confident in this round for hunting and HD. I got the Speer's primarily for shooting, although they may perform just as well.
I know the Barnes black tip 110's are the cat's meow, I don't want to spend that much per round.
just saw this endorsement for the 300BLK 110g Hornady Vmax
No, it's a hot load but still .5 grains under max spec from Barnes.Have you seen any pressure issues on this with 19.7 g?
Having lost 2 deer with 18.x H110 pushing 125 Nosler and Hornady pills, I would recommend only 110gr bullets for shorter barrels. 125s simply wont expand with under a 10" barrel velocities. I think Hornady says 1600fps with the SST but it sure didn't work that way for me in the real world on a real animal.
Exactly why I did not pursue any more work with 125s.
Well known, I like that 100 FB Raptor for serious Terminal Performance. It is the best there is, and if you ever see it in the field, you will agree. Cheap? NO..... But not like you are going to shoot 100s or 1000s of them. At least not normally, but I do order 2500 at a time myself. LOL........
The Barnes TAC is next in line, it is excellent in Terminal Performance as well
The various Hornady bullets do reasonably well at 10.5 and 8 inch velocities. Not Barnes or Cutting Edge good, but decent as long as you keep velocity 2100-2300 fps at impact.
This is what I’ve read a few different places and given the experience you shared recently, I’m assuming you’ve actually confirmed this.as long as you keep velocity 2100-2300 fps at impact.
Didn't Hornady just come out with a .300blk supersonic specific projectile? I think you posted about it recently

This is partly why I’m building a 10.5” .300BLK pistol to compliment my current 8.5” pistols.
I am very partial to the 10.5 inch guns. Running the 100 Raptors in these I am getting 2330 to 2380 out of the various guns. That is extremely effective for the ranges these guns will be used. On average with the various 8.5 inch guns here I am still getting 2280. 50-100 fps less than the 10.5. While with some bullets this would make little difference, I can tell you from experience with a Raptor, 50-100 fps increase in impact velocity is noticeable in the amount of medium destruction and trauma inflicted.
In addition, do not compare depth of penetration of my work with ballistic gel. You can double the number if considering BG. You can add 80% in animal tissue. With Raptors in Animal tissue you can double what you see in the test work here, and that percentage is conservative. Just FYI................
Trespassers or water buffalo, cause everybody’s got a water buffalo...On penetration notes, what medium are you using if not BG or tissue?
