Anything 'special ' I need to know about building a 308 AR?
I know to get a 308 lower....everything else is drop in correct?

Two different styles of uppers and lowers.

DPMS and Armalite. They are not interchangeable. Other than that, I believe everything else is the same.

Not exactly. There are two main patterns (DPMS LR-308 and Armalite AR-10) and a few variations of each. Everything from buffers and tubes, pivot and takedown pins, bolt catch, upper, lower, barrel nut, barrel, rails can vary between the two. Oh and bolts.

Most of the parts available are gonna be DPMS LR-308 (not gen 2) compatible, but different makers will have various specs for upper and lower and some makers will cross over between some DPMS and some Armalite pattern parts on their gun, some proprietary. I would say stick with DPMS pattern and try to get lower, upper, and LPK from same company. Make sure you get a short buffer if going with standard length buffer tube; I would recommended an extra power spring and heaviest buffer you can get. Most barrels will work. Rail wise will depend on the spec your upper is built to but most likely will be DPMS low I think - double check me on that. And make sure you get an adjustable gas block.

I started out with a kit and upgrading one piece at a time as I learn the platform. Very fun rifle platform to work with.

Just keep things simple. Get everything except your barrel from Aero. Then choose the barrel of your choice, as long as it's "dpms style", most are. Lots seem to say they have teething issues when they do a 308 build. I never have. Have built one with a rainier arms barrel and one with a Wilson combat. Both have ran flawlessly from the start.

Well, I take that back. I built the Wilson combat one with a rise armament bcg. It had serious issues. I bought an Aero and then it started working flawlessly. Rise replaced it, but I haven't bothered trying it. Just keeping it as a spare.

Buy a matched upper and lower set. Bolt carriers are cross compatible between AR-10 (Armalite) and LR-308 (DPMS). Buy a matched bolt for your barrel, or whichever bolt your barrel manufacturer recommends. Use the Armalite recoil system, buffer tube, spring, and no lighter than a 5.4oz buffer. Finally, be aware that lots of manufacturers label their parts for "AR-10" compatibility when in fact they aren't at all compatible with the Armalite specific pattern. Research before you buy anything, and pay these guys a visit:

Best of luck to you, feel free to PM me, I've owned a half dozen or so varied large AR platforms and can help you diagnose stuff if you need it.

Yes, there is a lot of special things to know. Ar10 are not like building an ar15. You will need an adjustable gas block, depending on your buffer system you will have different options. You can do carbine tube with short buffers, vltor a5 tube and standard ar15 buffers rifle length spring. Also the a1/a2 rifle length tube with rifle spring and rifle buffer. If you want a 16" get a mid length gas. Don't get a 16" rifle length gas barrel. If you get a 18" or 20" get a rifle length gas barrel. Most of the gas ports are over sized and you will need an adjustable gas block, heavy buffer, standard bcg to get them to run without malfunctions. Below is a link to one I have for sale. You can see the parts I have used and also get a idea on the cost of an ar10 build.

And there are two types of DPMS uppers, but with DPMS gone, I don't believe it's an issue anymore.

If you the Armalite route, your parts choices are slimmer than the DPMS/SR25 style receiver set.

Do your research.........
