Just picked up a Vortex Strike Eagle 5-25×56 for my ar10 and need help with a mount. Not sure if I need an extended mount or not. Gun will be used for plinking, recreational shooting and maybe some hunting. No need for a quick detach feature. Prefer the scope to sit down as low as possible and want to be sure I have proper eye relief for all shooting positions. First time putting a scope on a gas gun, much more familiar with bolt guns. Hoping to just have to buy once and not go through trial and error. Thanks

Ooh. 56mm bell diameter *may* touch your top rail for some cantilever mounts. I'm not sure on the math for that, so someone else may need to clarify that. If so then you'll need to get a higher cantilever mount. If you do have to get a higher than standard (anything over 1.5" AFAIK) you should probably invest in the Magpul PRS stock or something else with additional cheek riser mount height.

EDIT: Tim has shown that you should be fine with a standard height mount. The concern has been mitigated, and you should be fine with basically anything.

For an AR10, those tend to have 0moa of cant on the top rail, so it's safe to go with either a 0moa or a 20moa canted cantilever mount, depending on your preferences and how far you want to shoot out to. 100-300 yards? Probably 0moa cant. 400+ yards? Maybe the 20moa cant is worth it.

For brands, Vortex, Warne, LaRue, Burris, Scalarworks, Spuhr and Leupold are all good choices. Personally I really like LaRue.

Burris PEPR 34mm mount with a 58mm (OD)objective bell leaves about 4.5mm of clearance on a full length rail. The Burris mount adds 20MOA cant.

Not an AR, but a rifle with full length rail so same-same.

SPUHR SP-4602, 34mm with 6MIL of cant. 58mm objective. Leaves ~6mm clearance.

Bottom line is that pretty much any 1 piece 34mm mount designed for an AR will work. 1-piece AR mounts don't really come in "low, med, high" like you'd see with inidvidual rings. Not sure why not, just haven't seen many/any advertised that way.

Personally, I'd stay away from Warne but otherwise they're really all pretty good. ADM is good value. Vortex feels 'light' to me, but I never had an issue with them.

Spuhr is stupidly expensive, but bomb proof.

Edit: To answer the basic question you posed....yes, you'll want/need an extended mount for a scope like that.

Awesome, I did leave out I wanted a 20moa mount but looks like that doesn't change anything. Very helpful!
Yep! The world's your oyster here. Just pick one you like, as all those brands I listed are just fine.

EDIT: I will mention one thing. I really like LaRue because of their shape. It fits the cantilever mount, a brass catcher mount, and my flip-up rear BUIS while fitting everything squarely on the top rail of the upper receiver. Burris sticks out *just a little* over the receiver because it has a steady rise from the front rather than a defined, angular cut at the start. This is entirely for personal preference because I insist on using a brass catcher on my own rifles.

I run Larue and GG&G on mine but ADM and Geissele make good stuff too.
