A good friend finally offered to sell me the 38/44 he sniped out from under me four or five years ago. It's a shooter grade 4" that has been refinished. The main reason I want this guy, it's marked Pueblo, Co. P.D. I started my career in police service with C.S.P.D. Which is 30 or so miles N of Pueblo.

I'll post photos as soon as it gets here.

Photos added see post 12.

Cool! Can't wait for pics and a range report.

4" 38/44s are fairly hard to find anymore. I had one, once. It was a very fine shooter. Can't remember what I traded it for, but the guy who got it still owns it. It was a forever gun for him.

Can't wait to see it, Fred.

Sir, they are out there, but sadly they become pricey, and even more so with the 4" versions.
I like you made the mistake of selling very well done "cut down H.D." 3 1//2" barrel, patridge sight, white outline rear sight, removal of lanyard ring, action job, stag grips, and relocation of Serial number to grip frame. Then to add insult to the pain, I let him have it for $550.00.

I lucked into a shooter grade postwar 6.5” 38/44 Heavy Duty a couple years ago in a trade. Some numbskull had done some creative grinding to the grip frame, but that made it cheap ($350). A custom smith I know just welded up said grinding and recontoured it to factory dimensions, is rebluing it, and I’ll have a great looking shooter. Won’t be parting with this one so casually.

I am generally not in favor of reblues, but someone else made it necessary, not me. It is a shame, too, as the 6.5” barrel length is very scarce in this model.

All Kersarge I have ever seen exhibit heavily carved leaves ribbons and acorns. These are not. The carvings can be seen on Google images. What they do look like to me is a nice set of Keith Brown's. Easily known upon arrival.
Clint Smith says to avoid "turd lickers". They are the ones on the range when all rounds are cutting the 10 ring and the weather is beautiful, invariably look over and say...spodda rain tomorrow. A fellow I know recently was quick to point out...something look strange about that hammer and trigger. And this on a 100+ year old gun! Avoid turd suckers. Enjoy your new gun!

This. Plus, the hardware on these is too new to be Kearsarge. I think they could be Keith Brown's work, as well. In which case, you still made out like a bandit.

Billy and cubrock thanks for the info. This gun is about a gift from a friend who's trying to slide in at home one last time. And it's going to be a close call at the plate. Surgery to remove 40% of his liver is Monday the 19th. I'm kinda worried right now.

Like your post for support, not because I like what your friend and you are going through. :(

Well, I'm a happy guy. It arrived today and is in much better condition that the photos led me to believe. The mystery is over. The grips are marked culina 2011. A big THANKS to those of you who offered your comments.
I think I'm going to like it here. Fred

Please post a photo, it's the rule around here.

Believe it or not, Culina was my next guess after Keith Brown. Culina makes very fine stocks as well.
