I have started reloading 40,9mm, and 45. No issues with 40 cal and 9mm but 45 brass is coming out like this. Any ideas looking at the brass what I can do to correct. Ammo shoots fine. B03EE2A1-1C24-4A5F-B0BF-B9FAA450B8DD.jpeg

It is your powder choice. What are you using?

Reactions: Me.
I’ve used that powder for a lot of different calibers. It is a very versatile powder. I just gave away a 1 lb can to a friend because I didn’t like how dirty it was.

It’s been a long time since I’ve reloaded any .45 ACP so I can’t say what might be a cleaner powder for you. I would check with Toprudder here on the forums. He could probably recommend something a lot cleaner.

Taper crimp yes. Leaving the range now will measure diameter when I get home. Thanks for all the feedback. Been using 5gr which is in the mid part of the scale.

Bullseye is "dirty" also fast.
Cast or jacketed?

I don't recall getting any sooting at 5.0gr with a 200 or 230 cast or coated. Haven't shot a jacketed 45 bullet in years.

Case soot typically indicates low pressure and slow/insufficient case expansion on firing. It's pretty common in 45acp and other older "low" pressure rounds. Other than ugly brass and maybe slightly accelerated chamber and action fouling doesn't hurt a thing. There are other powders that are less likely to do it.

200 coated. Yes the ammo performed great. Just the casing. I have noticed some also with a few factory loads I have shot

Like others have said, dirty cases like that usually indicate case not expanding quickly enough to form a gas seal. Not really that much of a problem unless enough of it blows back into the gun to dirty things up a lot.

In 45acp especially, it is better to pick a fast burning powder and load towards the upper end of the charge range, than it would be to use a slow burning powder and load in the lower end of the charge range. My favorite for lower recoil loads is Clays.

Bullseye has, to me, always been a rather sooty powder.

Bullseye, Unique and 2400 are all that are used here. They are old, I am old, we all work good together for over a half century. I have seen what you described and the fellas ahead of me^^^ are "on the money". They named 3 things any one of which can leave your case sooty. As some have already said...won't hurt a Thing!

Not enough crimp.
That is Never the problem with 45 acp.

All the 45 acp crimp does is roll the belled case mouth straight after seating the bullet. A crimp that you can see, that is actually the edge of the case mouth turned in against the bullet, will mess up head spacing on the case mouth.

The dirty brass can be fixed by tumbling it. ;)

Looks like a bunny fart load. whats your recipe?

I also shoot 5 grains of Bullseye but with a 230 grain fmj. It leaves my cases similar to yours but not quiet as bad. The load hammers so I just tumble it before I load her back up. It must be a pretty dirty powder partly because of the burn rate in comparison to case mouth expansion. I am very close to max and it still gets dirty but doesn't bother me at all as long as it is hammering.
