Everything points to this being the ideal North American round for Deer to Elk. But seems like Browning / Winchester are being shunned by Hornaday and others in favor of 6.5 PRC.

If I ever go to a dedicated light weight backpacking rifle, I think the X Bolt in 6.8w would be the right combo.

There is a 7 rem mag with a lot more options of factory rounds.

I shoot a 270 and like it so the 6.8 western seems like it could take what I like but improve some of what I don’t (eg designed for longer more modern bullets, faster twist barrels from the factory to stabilize those heavier bullets). But I think I’d be more tempted by a 7 PRC now, if nothing else I suspect they will have more factory support going forward than the 6.8 western. Haven’t shot either though so not sure you should put a lot of weight in my opinion!

I think it is because the PCR cartridge lineup fits competition shooters and hunters. I think the 6.8 just had bad timing.
