6mm ARC….talk me out of it

got sqauded up with a guy shooting 6arc at the vortex sniper challenge and he was deadly with that rifle. If I was not already neck deep in the 6.5g camp I would go 6arc.

Without derailing the thread, I’m extremely happy with my 6.5 Grendel, I went into the build thinking I’d never shoot beyond 600-700 yards and I am not a hunter at all, but the idea of having a cartridge capable of shooting out to 1000+ yards along with the ability to shoot 90gr bullets for varmints up to 140gr bullets for medium/large game checked all of the boxes for me, I did consider a couple of other calibers such as the .224 Valkyrie & 6.8 SPC II (I have friends who built ARs in both calibers and they are pretty dang awesome imo) but at the end of the day the Grendel seemed like the best option for me.

Definitely keep us posted on how things play out and share your experiences with us, I’m pretty sure I’m not alone when I say this, but negative experiences by one person could end up being exactly what someone else is looking for when it comes to various cartridges.

I took the hand guard off tonight and I think the gas block is lined up I just didn’t back the adjustable screw out far enough. I hope to at least get to the indoor range this week to function check this thing again.

I ran the rifle up to my local ffl and he let me test fire it in their state of the art indoor test fire facility (you stand up on a stool and shoot straight down into a barrel with a bunch of carpet and sand in the bottom). His “gunsmith” verified everything is lined up but I’m still not getting any gas and the bolt is still not moving. I left the rifle with him tonight I’m going to bring him my extra Larue non adjustable gas block that I know works and get him to put that on and see if that fixes my issue.

My original agb works after all. There’s an adjustment screw on the side of the gas block that regulates the gas and the screw on the front is a set screw that locks the adjustment screw in place. I was adjusting the set screw and didn’t know it. The picture is the adjustment screw on the side. Luckily I can get to both screws with the hand guard installed A13F70F7-38D6-46EE-ADFF-50E9C6BA953F.jpeg

Just sharing my observations. I finally got out and shot some hand loads yesterday. The only suitable powder I have on hand and can find is ram shot tac. Using 105 gr Hornady BTHP Hornady lists max charge of 26.1 @2400 fps. 25.6 gr was my best group at 2380ish and had extreme spread of 14 and SD 5.72. I only shot at 100 yards since I really needed to be working but the groups looked great I wasn’t ever comfortable behind the gun and felt rushed the whole time. Hopefully I can get my hands if some different powder soon and get my velocity up another 150 fps or so.

I loaded some more same bullet 25.6 gr of TAC Winchester small rifle primer. This was five three shot groups at 200 today. I’m pretty sure these are the best groups I’ve ever shot. I’m happy with the gun so far I’m going to load up some more of these with my brass from today and stretch it further next time. 5DA102F1-1E56-4F5F-A634-A2FE6A263882.jpeg

I’m wanting to build a precision shooting/hunting ar15. I’ve narrowed my options down to 6.5 grendel and 6mm arc. I’m leaning towards the 6mm mainly because I have a good source for factory ammo locally. I will mainly handload but I have to have some brass to start with. I will use this rifle mostly to shoot steel but it may end up on a deer and/or hog hunt. I’m thinking 16” or 18” barrel to keep over all length down with suppressor attached.

Anyone here have first hand experience with the 6mm arc? I’ve got a geissele receiver set I’ve got to do something with and I like the idea of a 6mm instead of another 300 blackout.
Okay, don’t do it!
