This is what happens when people who aren't serious carry guns:

Police in Kill Devil Hills shared pictures of two guns recovered the same day last month. One, a semi-automatic, was left in a nightstand of a vacation home. The other, a Glock brand pistol, was left under a mattress at a nearby hotel. So far this summer, the department has responded to nine such calls.

Seems like ATF is having no problem tracking down the owners. I can see how they could do that with a gun found in a rental, but what about the gun found on the side of the highway?

Strickland told us an officer even found a loaded gun on the side of N.C. Highway 12.
When they contacted that owner, "They said, 'Oh, I know I had lost it, but I didn't know where I had lost it.' They had placed it on top of their vehicle (then) drove off," said Strickland.

I always take extra firearms on vacation .
I have what I'm carrying on my person.
A full size backup and a ar pistol.
That being said I also make a checklist to make sure everything that arrives with me leaves with me.

I travel somewhat regularly. When I place my EDC on the nightstand of the hotel, my wallet sits under it and my keys tucked into the belt clip of the holster. No way I'm walking out of the room without at least one of those items. And I'm certainly not leaving the premises without them.

They most likely ran a trace starting with the manufacturer. They call Glock and say where'd this gun go, and then they follow it from there, through the FFL, then to the purchaser. It's actually not as easy of a task as you'd expect.

When we go on hunting trips we have left several long guns in hotel rooms. Some locked up in cases, some laying on the beds. Room service never said a word.

I am kind of…so what?

Folks leave stuff all the time. Phones, tablets, clothes, dead bodies… it happens. Only the sheep freak out because it’s a gun. Heck folks leave kids (and pets)in cars often…

But because “ITS A GUN” …

Leave a hammer or baseball bat and no one says a word

Man, this is a brilliant advertising move.

Buy a couple of low $ guns and leave them in the hotel rooms. Spread the work of what was found.

Bam! You're all booked up a year out.

Someone ought to let Arman9478 know there's a good deal going on used firearms in hotel rooms.

But most of the time, firearms left in hotel rooms are stolen by the cleaning staff.

Man, some of the cleaning staff at our hotel were salt of the earth. They watched me grow up from a baby to a grown man, they were part of my family and we would have done anything for them.

Then there were some that would steal absolutely anything not nailed down.

My son had a business trip to OBX with the sales crew. He made the mistake of bringing his VP40. He couldn't carry on the sale site. Couldn't lock in the boss's glove box either. He put it in his bag that he left in the hotel. Cleaning staff stole it.

Wife and I were in the mountains last week. Came into the cabin for the first night, not going out any more. I laid mine on the table beside the TV remote and the AC remote. Went on about my business. Wife was busying herself arrangining everything, suitcase here, bag there, and so forth. Suddenly she froze and looked at me. Saw the stuff on the table and said, I thought someone left a gun in here. My response, I wish they had.
