I would often compliment people that were selling particularly nice items and just realized that this is apparently frowned upon as "ad clutter". I did not know or expect this, since the OPs usually keep bumping their posts up all the time I figured my comment would do no harm. Sorry Mods.

It falls under this rule:

2. Keep your posts in a BST ad relevant to that specific sale. Clarifying questions about the item are OK, but nobody cares if you wish you were closer, if you have one just like it, or that you wish the seller good luck with the sale.

AD STOMPING IS NOT TOLERATED. If you don’t like a price, condition, terms, the font used or anything else about an ad just move on. Ads should not have to be ‘cleaned’ of remarks when folks have no intention of purchasing. Repeat offenders may (and have) be subject to temporary or permanent bans.

If you’re not the buyer or seller, there’s almost zero reason to post in an ad.

@NKD just think of all the money you have saved @BigWaylon by keeping him busy moderating instead of building form 1 items. I think BigWaylon should take us out to eat for a really nice steak dinner, for helping him save money.

And it’s nothing personal. Staff deleted dozens of posts a day between ad clutter, early bumps, and ads without prices. All because people don’t read/follow the posted rules.

Just don’t miss the last sentence of the rule quoted above. 😉

I like the "cleaner" BST compared to most gun forums. I asked a seller recently what caliber his 1911 was, he updated his first post, and mine was deleted. Now others can find it in the first post without having to search in the replies. Everyone wins.

More BST drama. I wish there were a way to turn those threads off.
we will get right on installing that widget that prevents you from clicking on them. What model mouse are you using?

Not sure if youre serious or just trolling, but here goes anyway:
There is a way. At the top right under the title, there is an ignore button. I use it a lot.
You can even ignore whole sections of the forum at once from the forum list the same way.

Is the drama worth looking for?
Just my opinion, but, no, not really.

I disagree. Its sad and mostly just a time suck. I genuinely dont care and have better things to do.
But for those that just have to see it or jump in it, whatever floats the boat.
These are the differences that make this country great.

Not necessarily jumping in on it, just like watching it. I find it comical.

Ad clutter. Nice. Y’all keep this place pretty locked down. If I posted in an add, even if it’s “nice ____” it was for a reason.
Stick around and I suspect you’ll soon realize we actually DON’T use a heavy hand in moderating.

The classifieds are the exception to that rule. We DO keep the ads clean based on years of experience. Other parts of the forum you can pretty much do and say as you please (keep the public areas grandma friendly though).

Aww heck, if you knew mawmaw… One of the fondest memories I have of her, Budweiser in hand, trying to start the lawnmower. She was too light for the seat switch and was bouncing up and down cussing like a sailor.

“Nice _____” falls right in line with “I have one just like it” and “GLWS”…which are spelled out in black and white to be against the rules of the Classifieds.

Unless you’re asking a question about the item itself, or posting “PM sent” (which I still think is useless), there’s almost zero reason to post in somebody else’s ad. On top of that, anything that could be considered an offer/negotiation must be via PM, per the rules. That would include “ever get to Charlotte”, “would you trade for a _____”, “interested in trades”, etc etc etc.

…and now I’m beginning to doubt that @tobyscreams was telling the truth in his intro thread when he said “I’m an expert at everything so no need to question anything I post”, as he clearly doesn’t know the rules. 🤣🤣🤣

Knowing the rules and following them are decidedly different.

My two deleted posts were to quite seriously accomplish two specific tasks and not to add stupid comments to increase my post count. One to open up conversation on possibly selling just the scope, and one wondering why someone would need a pistol permit for a rifle. But that’s okay, the scope wasn’t for sale (yet) and the rifle sellers terms are stupid but they are set and I’m not going to deal like that. So point taken…. I guess.

It’s okay though. I am a firm believer in second chances. So I’ll give y’all one more go.

All kidding aside this has seriously left a bad taste in my mouth. Which sucks, given the “caliber” of people on the other NC forum I’m actively on. And it is they who recommended this. I suppose I had similar expectations.

Just a comment in general, not aimed at any recent back-and-forth in this thread or another.

Sometimes the BST section just isn’t for somebody. Feel free to join in all the conversations elsewhere on the site and contribute that way.

Most people will want to see a pistol permit or a concealed carry for a rifle just to know you are legally allowed to own and take possession of said rifle. I was in the same thinkin as you were till I saw the difference when trying to buy a pistol from a mod here. And he was gracious enough to be patient with me till I got a permit which led to my concealed carry.

Sorry that the moderation gave you a negative impression.

When the rules were established for the BST section, they were done so for very good reasons. While it may seem harsh at times that we don't allow commenting unless it is a clarifying question about the item itself, it keeps the advertisement clutter down. Also, some people are quite good at "stealth stomping" an ad by asking a question that wasn't really related to the item.

The seller gets to set the terms of the sale. Quite frankly I agree that a permit isn't needed for a rifle transaction. But, we let the market decide that, so to speak. People can simply decide that if the terms of the sale aren't amenable they simply won't buy it.

If it makes you feel any better, I've commented on a BST ad and had my comment removed. There are times I nerd out over some things and can't resist the urge to add more information that I feel should have been in the post. Typically it has to do with how awesome a particular firearm is based on so and so reasons. Sometimes the temptation is more than I can stand.

Glad to see us add more rules…. I mean for real, if we got wind that the govt was gonna require purchase permits for rifles we would protest, donate to the cause, write our politicians, etc because they were infringing upon our rights. Why would we do that on our own and be generally agreeable?

Because "Rights" are a 2 way street.

Seller has a right to impose idiotic terms
Buyer has a right to think the terms idiotic (which they are) and move along

Neither the buyer nor the Seller is the .Gov with a badge and gun used to enforce their particular preference.

So you think the answer to my question is “because they can”? Nice. Guess I’ll start getting finger prints when I sell something too… I’m not worried about “can” but “should” is different.

I think the answer was because the government can require that you enter into a transaction under their terms, therefore taking your rights, while an individual can not. Feel free to ask for fingerprints and a stool sample, it’ll give us something to do on Friday night.

and what new rules are being added, I don’t see it.

Toby,

While I ended up not asking for it for any of my long gun sales, I did consider asking for a CHP or pistol permit at one point before selling them as I looked into "what's the legal way to sell as an individual" in NC.

There are a bunch of disqualification categories for firearms sales that you as a private individual can't validate unless you know the buyer (and might not need to as an individual sale vs a FFL sale), but as a seller you could make sure none of the items like the below are issues with your buyer. A CHP or PPP are really the only way to confirm they aren't a problem.
  • Conviction (felony or misdemeanor) where the crime has a maximum imprisonment term exceeding 1 year (even if a buyer did not receive actual imprisonment exceeding 1 year).
  • Warrant (felony or out-of-state misdemeanor).
  • Felony pre-trial release.
  • Misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence restraining/stalking/protection order mental health adjudication or commitment.
  • Unlawful use or addicted to a controlled substance (including marijuana).
  • Dishonorable discharge from the armed forces.
  • Renounced U.S. citizenship.
  • Illegal alien.

Some buyers want to make sure things are 100% i's dotted and want bills of sale, pictures of IDs, etc. That's OK with me if they want that, but YMMV and if you don't like it, simply don't buy from that seller. Their perspective and risk tolerance is simply different than yours, just make your own decision and move on. I personally ended up not asking for them (only for ID if they looked under 18), but offer a bill of sale or FFL transfer if the buyer wants.
