Been shooting production division for a long time, G34 with FO sights and no other mods.
Tired of planning my assault on each stage based on mag changes so i want to run limited division.
Been looking at an STI 2011 in 9mm.
Thoughts and advice please.

If you want to be competitive in limited, get a .40. The minor power factor scoring will kill you against your peers. As far as guns go, 2011s are very popular, as are the cz tactical sports and some of the tanfo limited models. If you like the glock platform, go for the 35 and deck it out. Just my 2 pennies.

2011 platform is the most popular. If you have a problem someone on your squad will be able to help get you running. STI Edge is a great entry gun that won't break the bank but will be competitive. The Rock Islands and Para's have a following and are a much less expensive entry to a double stack 1911. Keep in mind they do not use the same parts as other 2011's. The SPS are a great mid price option and they use all the same parts as other 2011's.

If you are going to buy a new gun I'd suggest .40. The major scoring is a huge difference.

Why in the world would you spend the money on a 2011 for Limited, and then get it in a non competitive caliber? Go .40.

If you're gonna shoot 9mm in Limited, just get a G17 or something and save the cash, that way when you get tired of getting stomped on and decide to upgrade to a Major gun it won't sting as bad.

You can do it on the cheap with an aftermarket .40 slide and barrel and a few other small parts (assuming you still have the 34) new mags and a magwell, at least let you get your feet wet in limited, then if you like it, buy a dedicated gun.

Yep.

I have a G22, 35 and 24. You can be competitive initially with any of them. Honestly you would be fine learning the game with a 9mm as well. Winning D,C,B or A class doesn't require a great gun. If your financial situation allows an unlimited budget, go wild, otherwise any full-size 9mm or .40 Glock or comparable is a good choice. 4 mags with extensions and a good holster setup are great initial investments. Around the time that you're going for the overall division win locally and getting into shooting majors is a good time to reevaluate the pistol you've chosen. I have a couple racier guns now, and don't feel that starting simple hurt my progression. For someone starting out a G35 with sights they like, a magwell and possibly a bit of trigger work is the easy button.

I have no experience with these guns, but I will say I have never met a single person that bought a Sti 2011 and thought they had made a mistake.

You know I'm with everyone else on the .40. Hell, I've seen you shoot, you gonna need every point you can get!

I say run what you got for now. 5 points is 5 points. In the end, time is useless without points no matter how many or few mag changes are done

Points are also useless without time.

The game is speed and accuracy, neither is more or less important than the other.

I recently went through the same situation. I have only been shooting USPSA for about 8 months now and have only shot Production. I managed to sneak into B class and currently sit around the middle of B class . I decided that if I was going to get serious about the game I wanted to shoot Limited major because like you, reloading 3-4 times on a stage just isn't as fun as not. Cost really wasn't a huge deal to me as this is my one and only hobby and I don't mind spending a bit extra for nice equipment. I looked at several of the STI offerings and almost bought an Edge but after talking to another local shooter who recently switched from Production to Limited I decided to pick up a SPS Pantera in .40. He has been running his for most of this year and even ran it at Limited Nationals where he placed second in A class. My thoughts were if it was good enough for him it would be good enough for me. He is far more skilled than I will ever be! I could not be more pleased with the SPS! I am no expert but those that know me know that I have had my share of nice firearms and the SPS is by far and away the nicest that I have ever owned! The fit and finish is amazing, the lockup is super tight and the accuracy is simply incredible! I still have a hard time believing what I was able to do with it at 25 yards. Is it a $5000 custom? No, I am sure it isn't. I do however believe it is a superior gun than an out of the box STI. Not to mention the $550 savings will get you some good mags, holster, and pouches.

Dr 'Dre do you build a DANA 44? or do you get a DANA 60?
I doesn't matter either way if you don't go to the parts house

A Dana 44 at least has a place where it fits (Jeep with small lift, non-huge tires), whereas a 9mm 2011 doesn't really fit anywhere in USPSA.

Been curious about these. Gonna be picking your brain a little in the near future....
