A buddy sent me this picture and asked if I knew the brand of this ammo. There's an image of a wolf on it, but does that make it wolf?

He claims there is no other useful info on the box or package.

+1 on what @Ikarus1 said - headstamp is necessary, along with any stampings on the cartridge box.

I've seen this box design on some vintage/collector sites. It's old school Barnaul ammo I believe, and predates the ubiquitous "Wolf" brand we American AK shooters all know (Wolf is an importer, and sources much of its ammo from Barnaul, and from other factories as well). More coincidental than anything else, and indicative of the kind of game the manufacturer intended certain rounds to be used for. For example - the wolf inside the scope target was printed on 7.62x39 ammo, as seen in your buddy's photo above. Likewise, Barnaul used an image of a deer on its 7.62x51 boxes, and a bear on its 8mm boxes from this same time period.

Probably not corrosive as advertised, but I'd treat it as corrosive surplus anyway if I planned on shooting it. Or, pull a round and do a nail test on the primer.

Here's a handy headstamp reference guide: http://www.russianammo.org/Russian_Ammunition_Page_Headstamp.html

FWIW Barnaul makes Monarch x39 ammo for Academy, and it's about .25 cents a round. Great stuff for AKs. I like Golden Tiger just a bit better for general plinking but Wolf/Barnaul is good stuff.
