I have some hunk of junk Simmons scope on my .22lr bolt gun. I'd like to upgrade it to something nicer. I was leaning towards either the PA Classic 3-9x or a Nikon rimfire scope.

I also need a recommendation for some quality grooved-receiver type rings. I've just got some Weaver ones that are probably pretty crappy.

It's going on a Remington 582.

I dont have rimfire specific glass on any of mine. An Athlon 2-12 on one and a Bushnell 2.5-10 9n the other. Pretty much anything with decent glass clarity will do if it fits the magnification range you want.
I liked Nikon scopes. Good glass for the money. If you find one you like somewhere, just remember that Nikon is out of the scope game now. Their CS will still warranty certain products, but not all, and even that will go away as time moves on.

With Athlon Argos on sale gonna be pressed to beat it for the price..... should get you 10-250

Looks sexy. How's the company reputation? Never heard of them. I rarely ever look at scopes, just dots.

Didn't know Nikon was outta the game. News to me, thanks. Explains why the used Prostaff Scopes are more than retail.

When you say grooved receiver rings, are you asking about rings that fit the 11mm dovetail on some rifles?

Nothing special about this scope, other than a nice discount (half price) if you’re not after tons of magnification:

Yes, I believe mine is a 3/8" grooved receiver.

Crossfire is an option too; I supposed if PA Chinesium is in the running this should be too.

I'm thinking the Vortex Diamondback BDC 4-12x40 might be a good midway point between the PA or Crossfire and the Athlon. - I feel like the 6x on the Athlon is a little much, and that reticle would be wasted on me.

Weaver 2.5-7x28 is a great rimfire scope. Burris Signature Zee rings are quality bits as well & very reasonable.

Great customer service on par / better than Vortex. Glass is as good / better. I run the Ares 2.5-15 on my primary 10/22 clone and have a crossfire and argos on the other. For 10-100 yrds the argos is plenty sufficient. I have had two of the Vortex Crossfires and while they are decent I would pay more for the Argos.

Love those setups. I was looking at the 10/22 TD SS. I've wanted a 10/22 for a while now. This old Remington is a great shooter but being lefty it's not super fun for me to shoot regularly.

Watch the refurbished sections …

My 2 favorite all-around rimfire scopes are older models with simple duplex reticles … a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 3-9x40 EFR and my Leupold VX-2 4-12x40 AO Fine Duplex. Both are parallax adjustable down 10 yards and their reticle is not too busy … a reason I stay away from BDC reticles along with they never really sync up the gun/ammo combo to the yardage they claim.

PARALLAX PARALLAX PARALLAX

Get adjustable bell or side focus. Side focus is better(easier) but more $$$

Dedicated rimfire scopes will be set around 50 yards

I have the Weaver @Crazy Carl mentioned and it great for a plinking/squirrel gun.

I owned a few Burris Droptines (only one now). No complaints.

Athlon is great too. I have an Ares, Midas Tac, and Helos. These are for a little more precision and distance.

I'm primarily just looking for something for 50-100 and can handle some rough handling.

On the Weaver, where the fine crosshair turns to a larger one, it is right at 100 yards at 7 power. I’ve confirmed with SV ammo.

Edit: The Weaver looks to be discontinued ☹️

Leupold fixed 4X rimfire is a great woods scope. Wish I never sold mine. Pricey for what it is, but excellent glass.

Europtics has an open box Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 for $170.

Wish I could find some better rings for a grooved receiver but there must not be much call for them. There is so little material clinging to the receiver I'd almost think I could rip it off by hand.

Pretty sure I'm using the Weaver tip-off see thru rings.

What about these? I don’t know much about their rings, but they seem to do ok with their optics. 😎

This is a popular mount on one of the rimfire forums. I bought one 3-4 years ago, seems pretty solid.

But won’t fit his dovetail correctly, as least as I understand it. 3/8” & 11mm dovetails have different angles, as do their mounts. So they might attach, but won’t be as secure.

In looking that up, I also learned the 3/8” is measured at the bottom at the 11mm is measured at the top. The 3/8” dovetails seem to be almost 13mm at the top. Weird.

Optic should be chosen in accordance with the purpose of the gun. If it's a squirrel getter you'll want something not overly powerful or heavy for offhand shooting, maybe a 2-7, 3-9, or fixed 4x. If it's for bench shooting you'll want enough power and clarity to easily see your hits at 50 or even 100 yds, maybe 4-14, 6-24, etc.

So I ended up picking up a fixed PA 6x32 w/ACSS reticle for $118. I get 10% off for MIL and then another 12% for their sale they always run.

Bought some Leupold Rifleman 1" medium rings.

I would have preferred 4x and was scouring for a deal on the Leupold FX-1 but it was super hard to find as I guess it's discontinued, and where it was in stock it was over $300.

If this doesn't suit my bolt action I'll try it out on the Henry lever gun I just got.
