Just picked up a viper pst 3-15x44.it’s going on a rem 700 308 what’s everyone’s thoughts on this for learning the fundamentals of long distance shooting?(also rifle will be used to hunt with)
Good to know.was hoping the 3-15 would give me enough to get to 1000 yards eventually.but also wanted to stay with something that was low enough power that I can still use it to hunt here in eastern NC where you may need to take a 40 yard shot.I have a 3-15 pst on my rem 700 in 308. I took a long range class earlier this year with it and shot out to 1200 yards. Never had an issue.
Ebr2d.couldn’t beat it for the price 550$ from europtics.it was a closeout for that reticle.Yup the 3-15 PST is a very good scope in its price range. Good features and reticle. You should have plenty of scope magnification to get to 1000 yards and then some.
Which reticle you have?

Just don’t like how the reticle gets so small on 4 power. But then again it will be on highest power most if the time
Thanks, the glass is great on dads scope. 2 things i like about the Viper HST is it is 8oz lighter and i like the looks of the turrents better. But i was afraid the glass wouldn't be as good as i would hope for.
I also rarely pay the premium for FFP. As you say the reticle is rarely if ever used at low power so the FFP advantage only comes at the high end of the scale. Any scenario where I was using it at 12X I figure I could just as easy use it at max mag 15X. Also I could use it at half power and just do the simple math, and do it with a full size reticle. I would only seriously consider paying for FFP in a truly high power scope (>20X) where max mag could be overkill at a distance I would need to range or holdover. That's why I asked as that is what I thought the answer would be. Most getting into FFP say that but they don't account for when using the scope it will be the rare occasion they are that low in the power range and even if they were it would be for a target so close that they wouldn't need the reticle for holds anyways and turning on the illumination allows for easy use. Where you will be using the scope the most in the 10x+ range the reticle being in FFP for holds for quick shots is important and much more so than the lowest power use. Use the FFP more and you will see that they actually do better for quicker shots and holds.
FFP doesn’t only come at the high end. Being able to use the reticle fast on any power is an advantage. Mirage might be up where you need to dial to 10x and with FFP you can still use the reticle. Also half power is not always half and the hold might be off. If you do that you should check it to make sure before hand.I also rarely pay the premium for FFP.
