I don't have a long range gun( 500plus yards). I think that's the max range for the 556 in my hands with my carbines.

I was looking at the 6.5 Grendel. I want it to be in a Ar 15 platform. Is this my best bet? Any other options?

Max range would be say 800yds but I don't have access to anything that far ATM just want the capability to do so.

6.5 Grendel
.22 Nosler (uses 6.8 mags and has little market support right now due to newness but it's getting there)

Ok so the 6.5 it is. Can I buy just the bolt and use it on a BCG I already have?

18" or 20" Barrel?

18" would be ok, but I'd prefer 20. The 6.5 has very good ballistics so 800 shouldn't present an issue. You will have to reload if you don't already.

If you reload there are several 6mm wildcats that work out to about 1k.

Grendel is just a bolt and barrel change. I have Grendel-specific mags, but my buddy uses standard mags. YMMV. As far as ammo goes, the most accurate I've shot was the 123gr Lapua Scenar from Alexander Arms, but it's 50-75% more expensive than Hornady's offerings.

The Service Rifle Team...

The team competes, primarily, with an accurized version of the M16A2 rifle at distances of 200 to 1000 yards.

Yes it will reach 1000 yards but ballistically it is spent and has very little energy left.

Grendel still has quite a bit of energy left at 1000 yards

Hell Jerry Miceluk can hit a 1000 yard target with a 9mm revolver does not mean it is going to be effective, get some, :)

A 77gr load pushing 2750+ will make it to 800yds with no problem. Heck... I've shot my 20" A2 with iron sights to 800yds before at the Palma practice match, albeit using an 80gr load.

Ok another question. Some of the barrels I have seen are threaded in the 5/8-24 like a 308 and others are threaded for 9/16-24. Does it matter if I use a 308 break?
