Sold my AR15 lower looking at going to the big boy platform, the AR10.

Being it will be a long range and a hunting rig, I would like to have a round that will do both well. I know the .308 and the 6.5CM are very good rounds, I dont know much of anything about the .260. I have heard of some .243 rifles as well.

Starting off it will be shorter ranges, but I will be stretching the legs of it every chance I get. I will be shooting it suppressed as well.

What would you set your gun up with?

I'd run the 6.5CM, if you're hunting shorter ranges and are drawn to military calibers, or don't reload 308.
A 243 is rough on a barrel if you shoot it a lot, the 260 is essentially the same as the 6.5 with a shorter neck and a 23 deg shoulder that will corrode the barrel throat out sooner.

For ease of ammo access 6.5 Creedmoor is the way to go. It's pretty close to a 260 in terms of ballistics.

Another option is the 6 Creedmoor which is right there with the 243. The 243 has lots of ammo support as well, but both are going to cost more than the 6.5 Creed.

I will say its not a match gun. It will be a fun plinker, and hunting rifle. It wont be seeing 1000s of rounds a year.

I have read a lot on the ballistics of the CM, but not very much on the hunting aspect of it.

Hornady' 6.5CM Precision Hunter is very accurate and does the job on deer.

For Big Game Hunting in an AR10 I'd go 308. Nice heavy bullet options for tougher than whitetail deer game, and lighter options for those whitetail field hunts. The 6.5 Creedmoor does have a higher ballistic coefficient, but at a hunting range of 0-400 yards the slight wind advantage of the 6.5 isn't going to make much difference. The 308 is going to put more energy on the target in practical hunting ranges. 6.5 is wonderful round shooting paper out to 1000 yards, and capable of taking deer. I just think the 308 win is a better all around for big game hunting purposes.

I have a CMMG in .308..no issues here...only pic I have at the moment...

and it shoots well enough with an aimpoint RDS..

I'm taking the AR10/308 out Sunday and see what I can get it to do. 100 yards, box ammo. Don't know. Haven't really been able to run it much with the new scope.
Plus I've done furniture and a CMC trigger. The stock trigger was so gritty that it was like a crappy 2-stage and it really messed with my head. The CMC is like buttah and my groups should show that, hopefully.

I'm building a .308 gun due to the fact I'm already set up for that cartridge and have lots of brass and loaded ammo. I've already shot the .308 out to 1000yds with a iron sighted M14. The .308 has already taken and proven itself on the game fields for me to include my longest harvest on a whitetail at 300m with a 18" FAL. If you still had a AR15 lower I would suggest looking at the .224 Valkrie.

FWIW PSA has Federal M80X 7.62 for $9.99 a box, 10 boxes ships free. So yeah, I'd get a .308 if you like to shoot a magazine's worth of ammo at a time.

If its just for hunting and plinking I would stay away from 6.5CM and stick to something cheaper like .308. I enjoy mine AR10 quite a bit.
