Which do you prefer and why?

Absolutely absolute. But I'm weird.

Absolute for sites that are only backup. 1/3 for sights that are permanently deployed so they don't obstruct as much of the red dot view.
Ditto. Even though I don’t have any that are permanently deployed.

The only one I have with a permanently deployed front sight is my Colt 6920 which has a Aimpoint Pro on it which on its factory mount is sort of between 1/3 and absolute.

I'm also weird in that if the optical sight is a red dot or reflex then I use fixed irons. I have flip ups on a rifle with a QD ACOG. Other magnified optic guns have fixed 45 degree sights or a mini reflex on a 45.

Almost all of my iron sights are of the “fall down” variety as my wife calls them. I usually use a lower 1/3 mount for optics. Irons are in the down position all most all of the time. Seems having the lower 1/3 optic mount let me keep my head up a little higher and is more comfortable imo.

Wife’s rifle has a dd fixed front and a folding rear with a rmr mounted on a adm lower 1/3 mount.
