Logged in to Armslist and I went to add something to my watch list and got this popup. I went to my account and you can no longer do anything without paying (other than browse). Obviously the FAQ is no longer correct.

Oh well, later Armslist.

Maybe it'll cut down on scammers. @kcult just posted the work around I was thinking about for enterprising folks hat want to sell to the larger audience of unpaid browsers.

They have really screwed themselves by making buyers have a paid account to contact sellers. It is one thing to make someone pay to sell on a venue. It is another to greatly restrict the customer market by making buyers pay. This will kill Armslist if they don't change it.

Well hell...

Does this mean I can get rid of those annoying half page ads? If it means less scammers and no ads, I'll probably throw $3 /month at it.

Yeah, I don't mind them charging to sell but I would have done it differently.

Options that should have been offered
1. Subscription, pay a monthly fee to post xx Ads. This is what they've done
2. Subscription, pay a monthly fee to post unlimited ads
3. Pay-as-you-go. Buy a single ad for $x.xx / each

No this means you pay for $4 per month to look at ads and the same small amount of people (and business) posting there. If they are scammers they can probably scam their way to use the site. There didn't even add any kind of reputation (think Gunbroker or here) or anything that would actually cut down on scammers. For the "Personal Premium" you can't even manage your limited listings anymore.

I would much rather support CFF.

Agreed. You charge sellers but make it free and as easy as possible for buyers. Sellers pay for the volume of buyers the platform brings. Buyers have other options and will definitely go elsewhere.

Yeah, no joke. I just went there to click on "contact seller" and they require a paid account?!?!?!?! I logged into my account and am no longer able to contact people. This might possibly be the dumbest move they made yet.

That's a huge price difference between the automatic draft and CC

Im not a buyer, didnt use it much at all

Maybe a stupid question, but what is ach that is cheaper

ACH (aka bank draft) is cheaper because Armslist isn't paying Credit Card fees to process. Their price difference is basically the "we really don't want to run cards, so we're gonna make it painful to do so" price. I speculate they anticipate a high rate of fraud and/or disputed transactions with CC that aren't an issue with bank drafts.

I received this email from them today.

Subject line: Sorry for the inconvenience.

A message form the CEO

Dear Armslist User,

I hope all is well.

You may be finding yourself having some difficulty navigating the site. We thank you for your patience as we upgrade our infrastructure in an effort to reduce scams, and improve the overall user experience. As you may know, we are facing yet another lawsuit from the anti-gunners at Brady United. In an effort to offset the mounting legal costs, we have created a new paid account type: The Premium Personal Program. While it's still in it's early stages, our roadmap for the program includes some exciting new characteristics for our users including exclusive discounts, exclusive deals, and a plethora of new site and account features in the months to come. If you'd like to give it a try, click here.

Thank you again for your continued patience and support as we experience these growing pains. We hope to offer a vastly improved experience soon.

Best,

J. Gibbon

If it will cut down on the scammers 25% I don't mind paying $4-5 a month to use their service, especially now you will be able to list up to 5 items instead of the 3 they cut it down to.
It used to be a great place to buy and sell but in the last couple of years, the scammers from overseas have made it damn near impossible to do anything.

It brought me here today. Although I will probably pay for armslist because Im totally addicted lol. I was able to edit and bump the ads I already had up without paying. Hopefully it cuts down on spam and more serious buyers will use it. I do miss the power search so glad that's back.

Now that it costs, I may not change my mind. ;)

Cheaper to join here, at $20/yr. ;)

And you get waaaaaaaayyyyy more than just the BST section. :D

They had to monetize it at some point. I hope this drives folks to our local forum boards. (not just bst)
It’s definitely started a slow already...

I've bought and sold a bunch of times. Every page shows six advertisements. I get monetizing the site but they just got greedy.

Bye Felicia.

Armslist was a pain to put up with but I bought and sold there several times. I made and squandered many dollars over there.

I'm not surprised but I am bummed.

The 10 ads per page wasn’t enough? How greedy can they be
