Article: Nearly one in three gun owners have used their firearm in a self defense situations

I know a friend that popped a bad guy in the noggin at contact distance with a .45

I have also fired a nine mike mike in self defense at a charging skunk.

These are two different definitions of self defense, what was the definition used in the study?

In 40 years of carrying, not counting for the Army, I’ve taken my gun out of the holster once in self defense, and didn’t have to point it or fire it. I was following a car down Springs Rd in Hickory one evening, minding my business, when they start shooting me the bird for no reason. I was following to close but I backed off some more. They slowed down and continued their act, this time rolling the windows down and sticking their arms out. I passed them when I got to the 4 lane and went on down the road. I got to the stop ligot at Section House Rd and here they come again. This time they stop, get out with sticks. My son who was about 5 at the time was in the truck. I couldn’t go around the car in front of me so I made a show of racking the slide of my 92 Beretta and they had better ideas about leaving. The only time it’s ever left the holster for self defense. I’ve thought hard about it a couple times. We had a couple of thugs come into the hardware store that I was working in at the time, with thoughts of robbing it, but 3 of us being armed changed their minds before they did something stupid. And a guy on a Harley followed me into a Sams Parking lot a couple of years ago cussing me and threatening me with a cut off pool cue. Again, I didn’t get out of the truck but did tell him if I did that I didn’t have a stick, I had a Glock. Again, he drove off flipping me the bird. I still don’t know what his problem was other than he was flying up the access road and my truck was sitting where he wanted to be. I’ve had enough close calls that I don’t leave the house without a gun. I’ve never made any threats to anyone , I’ve never done anything to anyone that would cause due harm, I try to be courteous and help people, but, there are crazy and dangerous people in this world and I’d rather be prepared!

20 years of concealed carry and longer as a gun owner the times I have had to use one to defend myself 0.

Same here, must be doing something wrong?

How do you account for that? Then, what are the number of event's that WOULD have occurred in such a scenario if I didn't have that firearm.
those kids might have been able to get in that hardware store and buy a new air freshener for their ride if they weren’t scared away by some crazy guy with a gun…😂
Ok... there it is. Experts... DGU or not?
those kids never got to check out the sweet sound system and new headers in that guys camaro!

or they had to score weed somewhere else because there was a cop at the walmart that pulled his gun on us like they did in the movie training day! 😂

i have no idea if crimes were prevented or teens were scared and had to go home and change their underwear (is crapping your pants in public a crime?)

This happened while I was in college at WCU, almost 28 years ago. Wrote it up when I was in grad school in Columbia. Got $75 for my story. "Caught in a Drive Thru Riot."

2-3 person jobs are very popular for stealing from retail stores.
One person goes to the left and makes some kind of scene to distract staff, the other person goes to the right and steals stuff during the distraction.
Back when i worked retail, we would sometimes preemptively just kick people out when they split up and tell them we'd call the cops if they didn't leave immediately.

Also, there's this popular example...

This is very commonly used to victimize people. In one variation a young woman in distress asks a man for assistance only to find out that she's working with a few guys to attack you when you let your guard down. They may stage on either side of your home door, out of sight, and let her knock on the door to ask for help and get you to open the door.

An aside - one of the personal defense guru articles I remember reading a long time ago was about when finding yourself in a situation headed from yellow to orange/red to take your gun hand, place it on your hip (like a draw) whether you happen to be carrying or not. About avoiding the fight when possible.
Done it. gun never left holster and the guy couldn't see because i cleared cover garment but my coat would have still been hiding it from view... but the guy definitely understood that he should reevaluate his decisions and then rapidly left me to resume my solitary walk a burned out area of detroit at dawn.
Funny thing is i was only making that walk because when I parked closer to where i needed to be, my car got the window busted out and i figured "what's the worst that could happen? it's only a few blocks to walk" and left my car in a more secure location.
