Athlon

Any thoughts good or bad on athlon optics?
I have as behind both in the 7-800$ range and both were about identical. The Athlon was just a tad bit clearer looking at the 300 yard target but not much. I have a few Athlon scopes and the tracking is great.

Customer service is fantastic. My nephew screwed up the threads where the battery goes. I spoke with Athlon and they said send it in. 2 weeks later my nephew got a call saying they could not repair his mess up and have him a new scope. And not only a new one the next gen up as well.

Great scopes. Just my opinion.

Athlon was started by a bunch of ex- Bushnell guys. So, they knew what people wanted and are hitting the market hard. I have a couple, but haven't fielded them extensively yet. On warranty, I had an one that had an issue with the adjustments. I sent it in and they sent me a new one.

Don't forget to check out one of our supporting vendors Doug at Cameraland.

Chineseum they are, but decent scopes just the same.
Looks like both have ties to over seas. And so does a bunch of other good scopes as well.

I had this question while trying to put glass on a 10/22. Ended up giving Meopta a try. Meopta is the folks behind some $$$$ European glass. Cameraland NY has the whole line on sale through Christmas.

Meopta has excellent glass and reticle. I ended up with three Optika6 scopes after I tried the first one, on Cameraland’s recommendation. I was looking for a non-Chineseum scope to compare against my Leupold Mark5HD. The glass is comparable, the turrets are different but work well and are easier to zero. The illuminated red MRAD reticle is an improvement over my Leupold.
The main difference, other than about being $1,000 less, is the Meopta weighs more. Build quality and price convinced me to buy more Meopta Scopes. They are very repeatable in the turret movements.
They aren’t a foreign adversary taking over our country via Wallyworld, either.

What about this one? Anyone own one?

A - You're probably going to want 1st focal plane.

B - Don't get it from Optics Planet. I think Doug has them at Camera Land

I would take Athlon over Vortex currently. Yes, Vortex has incredible customer service... that a LOT of people have to use much more often than one would hope... Just do some digging into the various "tiers" before making your decision (which Doug at Camera Land can help with). Often, the lower tiers use Chinese glass, and then will transition to the better Japanese glass (and sometimes assembly) as you go up in tier. I know only the Cronus series is assembled in Japan, but I'm not sure where the tipping point is for the actual glass.

Reactions: Me.
I have both FFP and SFP scopes but at LR (600 plus) the FFP reticle sometimes covers the entire target (X ring) at high magnification. I was wondering how the scope held up at the higher power settings.

Or transition to Philippine, adding yet another 'tier'.

I tried one (from EuroOptics) and felt that the reticle crosshairs were a bit too fine for me. I ended up getting an Argos BTR Gen2 8-34x56 from them. It was one of their "demo" models and so at a significantly reduced price. I'm VERY happy with it, although I wish the crosshairs were a bit finer. 😂 The turret adjustments are great. The parallex adjustment works fine, but the yardage indicators on it aren't particularly meaningful -- which doesn't matter at all unless you want to use your scope as a reliable range finder. It's FFP and has an illuminated reticle, which I can imagine using under certain conditions. I use it for target shooting with a CZ .22 LR only (now up to about 150 yds; it sits on a 25 MOA ramp), and typically just leave it set at 32x. I dial elevation up and down for stages at 50/100/150 yds.

I got a Vortex Crossfire 2-7x32 for my wife's AR-15, and it seems great as well (not quite in the same class or price range as the Argos). I looked closely at comparable Vortex scopes when I bought my Argos, but in terms of price/features/quality/warranty (even if not at the reduced price) the Argos seemed to me to be the better choice, but I won't argue that everyone will feel that way.

I have a cheap Athlon spotting scope. You can definitely tell it's built down to a price, but it works and hasn't given me any trouble so far.

I actually won some Athlon scopes back at the first of the year. The glass is much clearer than my Vortex Strike Eagle.

711b, You are correct. I should have been a little more clear. I was comparing the Strike Eagle to the the Cronus line from Athlon. I also have a 1-10 from the Ares line, which for me is great but my buddy's Razor 1-10 is a little nicer.

For what you pay they are well worth the money. Having said that, in optics you usually get what you pay for. After 40+ years I finally purchased a Nightforce and boy did it put all my Nikons, Redfields, Weavers, Vortex, Burris , and all others to shame.

Hmmm...

What about this one? I have some old geezer buddies that like to shoot BR at 100-200 yards. They shoot some itty bitty groups too. I doubt I can beat them with a .223 but at least I can make them sweat a little. ;)

From the comments it looks like the Athlon scopes aren't too bad.

Athlon optics are fantastic at every price tier they have. I have their Cronus 4.5-29 with the MOA reticle and positively love it. Great glass clarity, especially with the Japanese glass in the Cronus line. The turrets track very consistently, the reticle is very usable for both dialing and holds (shooter preference), the illumination is bright enough to be usable, and the scope body is rugged enough that someone I greatly respect uses Athlon as his scope choice for professional work overseas. My thought is if you don't want to spend the $2.5-3k on a Leupold VX5 or VX6 or Vortex Razor 6-36, the Athlon scopes are 100% the way to go.

I don’t recall if you looked though mine last time but I have a 4.5x29 Cronus on that tikka.

It’s nice but I have limited experience with higher end glass to compare it to anything else.

@hp468
You gonna bring it on the 7th?

I went ahead and ordered one for the .223 bolt gun. Couldn't resist the price. The only drawback is that I believe it has 1/4 clicks instead of 1/8. You would think if they advertised it as a BR scope it would be 1/8? We'll see.
