Axes - - new, old, restored (load some pics)

A few I restored from heads and handles I picked at from estate sales and flea markets. I am by no means an axe man or master craftsman, just like making old stuff work and look different.

I made the fire axe from a broke double bit

A couple more in line when I get time

I'll have to get a pic of some of mine. There are 9 sitting on the hearth right now along with my grandfather's adze. My favorite is a Collins cruiser double bit axe head that I found in my grandfather's stuff after he passed. Cleaned it up and sharpened it, put a handle on it and then made a leather sheath for it.

Do you ever Sell any???
Ha! Haven't made anything I feel worthy of somebody giving me money for. Can't say I've ever sold anything I've made, usually just give stuff away as gifts....with the intent for it to be used not put on a shelf.

What do y’all suggest for putting on the heads after clea and sharpening?
Stand the head up in a container and our in boiled linseed oil to cover the head, let stand for a couple days.
Wait for it to warm up first ;)

I’ve got a couple of old double bit axes that I just rehandled. I also just bought a couple of new Stihl axes. I’m going to strip that orange paint off of them and they are very good steel axeheads!

Where’s the best place to get handles from? I’ve been to Lowe’s, Home Depot and an old Ace Hardware. And I’m just not digging the quality. Is there a place online to order them from? I have an old splitting maul and a few others I want to get a handle for.

Reactions: Me.
If you are ever up around Jonesville, HWY 67 Hardware has a few decent handles. All of the handles you find locally, if you can find them, would not even make good firewood.

There are some on-line sources that are supposed to be better, Beaver-Tooth, Tennessee Hickory and Whisky River Trading. Some of these sell factory seconds at good prices.

From my wife's great-grandfather. I've been wanting to get it cleaned up and a handle put on it so I can hang it up in the garage but I have no idea what I'd be doing or even where to start.

From my (limited) research it looks to be a "True Temper Perfect" from the 1930-40's (?) as I cannot see any type of "Kelly" markings on it which I believe began in the 1940-50's. Digital scale shows it at 4 pounds.

Anyway, stumbled across this very cool thread and thought I would throw this picture in the mix. Y'all have some beautiful axes!

We own the hatchet that George Washington chopped down the cherry tree with........in negotiations now with The Smithsonian about displaying it there.
The man I bought it from swore that it was the one Washington used....he said the handle had only been replaced twice and the head once.

When you can get them Rural King has some good ones.

True Temper, Kelly works some of my favorites.
Nice chopping profile, with a good edge, it’ll cut.

I admit to a hatchet and axe fetish. Best to not touch my 22" single bit winged boys axe, there will be trouble.
One tool/weapon every man should be schooled with is an axe!
I was not going to mention the clevers but the cats outta the bag now....lol
