I have been thinking about hand gun barrel lengths. Why are there 2 standards ?On a revolver the barrel is measured from the forcing cone to the muzzle .The cylinder holds the cartridge. In a pistol the chamber does the same thing as a revolver cylinder .It holds the cartridge. So why is the chamber measured as part of the barrel in a pistol but the cylinder is not added to barrel length of a revolver. Example ,My Sig 229 . If I measure the actual barrel length( the part that has the lands and grooves) it measures 2 1/2 inches .Same on my Commander length Colt , 2 1/2 inches of barrel and the chamber takes up a little over an inch. What I am trying to say that a 4 inch barrels semi auto pistol is basically a snubby since it only has less than 3 inches of lands and grooves. Has anyone else ever thought about this. Don't take my word for it ,get out you tape measure and do the math. Let me know what y'all think . Maybe I'm over thinking but that thought kept me awake half the night.
