Next weekend - March 15-17 in Greensboro is the anniversary celebration of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, the Revolutionary War battle that broke the British Army’s ability to wage offensive warfare in the South and directly lead to the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, VA 6 months later.

Friday at 10 am is the annual Commemoration of the battle, the rendering of honors and laying of wreaths at the General Greene Memorial.

Saturday is the reenactment of the Battle of Guilford’s Courthouse, and Sunday is the Battle of Wetzell’s Mill.

Come on out and experience the war that made America.

I will be there with the artillery.

My wife is actually interested in going….. if the weather is nice we’ll be there, if not it’ll just be me and maybe a few of the guys.

Very fetching.

It does make you wonder if in actuality their uniforms were so crisp, or if they were filthy and unwashed having mired in the mud?
Probably most dependent upon the nature of the campaign and what time of year it was. And which army were talking about.

By and large, the Continental Army was, save for a handful of units, no where as well equipped and clothes as we reenactors portray. Many of us do have worn/repaired items that give some idea of hard use - but we have stockings and shoes….which could be in short supply on the American side of things at times.

Detailed records exist, at least for the British side, on when units were issued new uniform items and what those items were. Given that winter didn’t see a LOT of fighting compared to the summer campaigning season, uniforms would probably look the best coming out of winter quarters.

They did launder their items when they could, and bleaching items (using urine or the oxidative effects of plants undergoing photosynthesis) was a thing.

Dang, you strike a good figure there hoss! Gonna see if we can go!

One of the regularly featured questions, other than “Is that fire real?,” or “Did you really sleep in that tent?,” and “Are you actually going to eat that food?” is, unfortunately enough, “So are the Union or a Confederate?”

The American public is woefully retarded about our own history.
