the classic someone tries to rob you at the ATM machine you need something compact, fast, and has the ability to stop a charging evil doer in 1-2 shots - you forgot your reloads in your other pants and it’s just 1 assailant / which weapon do you theoretically have in your holster any 3” .357 or any .45acp semi auto with LESS THAN < a 4inch barrel

What do you have in your holster? what ammo did you bring? And why did you pick that gun? (aside from the restrictions mentioned lol)

Same thing I carry everyday. G43 with 124 grain Gold Dot. Draw, two shots from close retention if it’s at an ATM, because they’ll probably be close.

I do not get up in the morning and choose my defensive weapon based on how I think I will get mugged that day. I might put an extra handgun or a long gun in the truck if I have to go to Wilmington, but I generally just carry the same old boring J-Frame in a pocket holster and hope I can stay away from places in which I might have to use it. I do carry a Glock 21 in 45 Auto and a Mini 14 in the car I use to transport my wife since the only way maggots are going to get to her is over my dead body.

edit: If I was actually expecting trouble, I would try to go somewhere else or open carry an 870 with #4 Buck in addition to as many additional handguns as I could fit on my belt and in my pockets.

I don’t always carry the same thing, but often it’s a Hellcat. It carries well and I shoot it really well.
In cooler weather it will be a G19 in a Kramer OWB holster.

My Glock 43 in my coat pocket. If it’s summer time, it’s in my shorts pocket, in which the bad guy will excitedly ask “is that a gun? Or are you happy to see me?!?”

Yall’s wives don’t provide overwatch with an AR pistol while you grab cash?
This is the best answer. My woman always got my back. Or at worst, she’ll hit me while shooting at the bad guy

If this is a drive-up ATM, my weapon of choice is the long pedal on the right…they are certainly welcome to hang on for the ride, but it’s gonna hurt.

Sounds like the OP is looking for opinions specifically on compact high power handguns with the "stop in 1 or 2 shots" and his examples of 357Mag and 45ACP. No puny 9MMs need apply. :)

One place where a LCP is at a disadvantage.

don't get caught slipping.

circle the lot once or twice looking for threats. use a drive-up atm and pull close enough that it's difficult to squeeze by. don't be so focused on the atm itself that you forget to check around a few times. get in, get out, don't sit in long lines.

I use the drive up ATM at the bank once in a great while. Cannot remember the last time I used a walk up ATM. Maybe 1987.
To be fair, I have used ATMs in casinos in Vegas since then, but I was also comfortable leaving my wallet and chips on the table to go take a pee. I also hit the ATM at my mom's retirement community to get her some cash to hand out to folks who assist her with doctor appointments, etc. But outside of nursing homes and casinos, I avoid the ATM.

I used to get cash-back at Harris Teeter. With Venmo, PayPal, etc. I just don't ever hit the ATM anymore.

ETA: Sorry to derail. OP is asking about what to carry. I have no experience on that topic.

He said ATM machine.

There's no way I can take him seriously.

Now that I've got that out of my system, back in the day when walk up/in ATMs were the thing, even if I was carrying a gun, I would keep an open knife in my hand while transacting.

Some people skimmed the question but that’s alright

No particular favorite. I simply open carry at an ATM, gas pump, etc, more effectively managing a threats movement to contact.

Since starting that 10+ yrs ago, haven't been bum rushed again.

Any gun, large enough to be visible by approaching scavenger class human trash is sufficient.

In that 10 year span I note at least one crash stop with turn out from approach (scavenger class can be slow to assess risk) with the remainder simply holding at their observation line.

I also haven't used an ATM in a long while, but I supposed I'd think of similar situations where my attention may be directed elsewhere and I suddenly need a firearm.

I'd think that most people's choice of CCW handgun could work here, but I'd personally start with 9mm and go up (.45, .357., 10mm).

A Kahr PM45 and a S&W 340PD were two of my most-carried, non-9mm, CCW guns in the last 30 years.

Whatever gun/cartridge.
Deployment and accuracy are what matters. So skill matters more than gun.

Situational awareness to avoid it would be my goal.

In the rare occurrence that I am using an ATM it's going to be a drive thru.

My response would be to hit them with the car or miss them with the car as I drive away. The doors are locked and it stays in drive.

At the minimum I have an lcp max. I might go so far as to remove it from my pocket before I get to said ATM. Doubt I would end up using it.

It would probably be my usual edc 2 inch taurus 357mag loaded with 158 PFP from House of Payne munitions. I use atm quite often with my prepaid debit card cause I don't do banks and I am a cash kinda guy. Most times I use the drive up machine at the gas station. But allways lookin around anywhere I go not just at atm. The key is to allways be aware of what's around even if your in the "safety" of your home.

If we need cash, we normally get it in the checkout line at food lion. Not that people in line with you won’t see it, but it’s a little safer.
