I am about two games in and it is pretty fun. It is a little different being able to customize your gun on the fly.

I’m only 2 matches in. I’ve enjoyed it, but I’m not sold on it yet.
The specialist skins are just stupid, the same 4 characters on both teams doesn’t really give us vs them feeling. They really need to make specialist with unique skins for each faction.
Also the map in the beta is really bad. I miss the actual design of maps like Strike at Karkand or The Grand Bazaar. This map is just a block of what could be randomly generated terrain and buildings.
No defensible points or choke points.

I do agree on the map, it almost seems like a call of duty warzone map to me.

Nothing beats 1942 and the Desert Combat mod. I pinched pennies to get a Radeon 9500 Pro for BF1942 back in the day.
BF2042 does supposedly have versions of some 1942 maps like El Alamein and one or two others.

The franchise lost me in BF2 when they went to the promotion system with weapon upgrades, then eventually to a pay-to-play upgrade system in subsequent releases. Just release it all to everyone and let the battlefield sort it out! That's the secrete sauce to the franchise.

I had a top-something or other clan in BF2. Top 10 ranked server. Held worldwide server parties and tournaments. It was something else. All I have to show for it is a 4-year degree turned into 7-years due to gaming!!!

I don’t think any of the main releases had pay to play upgrades per se. You could buy a shortcut kit in BF4 to unlock everything without having to work for it, but it’s not that they could buy things you couldn’t get just by playing.
You can get cosmetic stuff by paying, which I hate in any game. I like soldiers to look like soldiers and not comic book characters.

Yeah--there was something that basically meant if you paid more or spent buttloads of more time than everyone else playing, you'd get a better weapon. And that sucked. It's been a while--forget what it was. I think it was the start of BF2142.

so, not quite as realistic as jumping/crawling/fastroping/running around with a sniper rifle (24), a carbine machine gun (180), a pistol (60), grenades (4), claymores (3), and a landmine carried on-body along with your radio, tablet computer, and drone?

Or being able to deploy multiple parachutes when I do not see anyone with a parachute on their back.

I played some more and like the map even less after a few more plays. So many tanks and choppers with no cover for infantry. Pretty much pointless to play as infantry.
