Best Knife Ever - or, at least, to date

My middle son, the knife maker, just finished this one. I think it is his best one yet. He made it for himself. I’m going to try to arm twist him to make me one.

Can he make me one for less than my Esee 5? I could still return that one I bet.

Put him in a pretzel hold and have him make several.
Like I told him at the show, I always look to see if he has something on the table.

Nice work.

Great work! Keep us posted how it performs. Like others have said, I’ll take one.

Doubt it. I had one made about the same size and it was more than an ESEE 5. But I like it

Unfortunately, no. I don't know his exact street price on something like this, but I know about how much time he has in it plus the cost of materials and an ESEE 5 will be quite a bit cheaper than what this one would be.

Naive question as I know little regarding knives, but is the patterning in the metal intrinsic to the metallurgy itself, or is that processed in or ...?

No. It is an acid-etched, stonewashed finish he puts on it before putting the handles on. Adds quite a bit of time to the build, but is worth it.

Good looking piece
What is the handle made of?

If I recall correctly, it is old Westinghouse micarta. Not sure how much of that he has left, but I'm pretty sure that is what he used. He is busy in his shop right now, so I don't dare interrupt the genius. LOL I'll check with him later.

Great looking blade. Which steel did he use?

Okay, this one is not Westinghouse micarta. That was a different knife he made recently. This one has scales of modern maroon linen micarta.

I think kinda a cross between a fallkeniven (sp?) F1 and a Dozier guide knife. Like the shape, never been a huge fan of that finish, but it’s well done.

Everything is worth more to you when you make it yourself. After working so hard on my rifle builds in gunsmithing, it would be hard to let them go for triple what they are actually worth. Your boy did an outstanding job from what i can tell cubrock.

Yeah, the stonewashed finish is definitely a preference thing. It is not the only way he finishes knives, but something he is working on perfecting to keep in his repertoire. Some like it. Some don't.

@cubrock has your son started getting the ABS certifications? Blades he is turning out, he’s got a bright future in the knife industry.

He has not. Up to this point, his life has been consumed mostly with school and working for dear old dad. He just graduated with a CNC degree and is looking for his first job. I imagine when the dust settles from that, he is going to get more serious about the knife making. He wants to do it professionally, even if it is only part time.
