Big Bend Camping Trip

Great pix! It’s unusual to see Big Bend so green; nice that Texas got a lot of rain recently.

We have actually had a ton of rain recently. I was surprised how green it was as we were driving in too.

Great pics! I did a month in the Grand Canyon, looks like the same territory. Rough, everything wants to bite, poke, or sting you. Beautiful tho.

Never been to the Grand Canyon but I’ve heard it is very similar terrain to Big Bend. Rough and everything wanting to but or sting you is a pretty accurate description though.

When you got your backcountry permit, did they ask about firearms? Did they require serial numbers from all of them?

Of the 3 times I’ve been, twice the ranger told us that if we had firearms, he would recommend that we carry them, and the other time the ranger didn’t ask anything about them. They definitely have never tried to get the serial numbers from us.

I've never had that in any NP I've been to that required a permit for the activity I was doing.

Looks like good times. We camped at Palo Duro Canyon this summer, south of Amarillo. It was really bad a$$. The Grand Canyon of Texas they say. I'm not sure how far that is from you since Texas is frickin' huge but if you get a chance I highly recommend it. It is similar in that everything wants to hurt and/or kill you. Except the wild turkeys walking through the campground, they seemed friendly but skittish.

I’ve never heard of that one. I wish I had more one here in TX, but we move in about 4 months so I probably won’t make it up there before we leave. I’d try if it were closer but I just checked the map and it’s about 7.5hrs from me.

Is that where you got the beer in your avatar? I’m pretty sure you can’t get that in NC. Excellent IPA

7.5 hours is a bit long! I did get that beer in Amarillo and I wish I had bought a couple cases of it but I was limited on space. We spent 3 weeks driving from here to the Grand Canyon and back with our camper this summer. Our brief exposure to Texas was great.

The week after they started allowing guns in Natl Parks, I stood in line at Big Bend Ranger Office to get a backcountry permit. The folks in front of me didn't have weapons, but asked what would be involved if they did bring one. They needed a list, with serial numbers, and names of the people who would be carrying them, and a bunch of other stuff. The folks in front of me said, "Gee I'm glad we didn't bring 'em!"

I just told the ranger feller I had no guns.

Glad to know they stopped that silliness.

Wow, that's ridiculous, they definitely don't do that anymore.

How'd you enjoy the trip to the park and do you remember where in the backcountry you stayed?

First, we hiked from one end of the Chisos to the other, with one overnight at 8,000 ft.
Then, we went to several locations down low, ending up in the campground on the river.
I had my Yamaha XT350 with me, and rode every single backcountry road in the Park.
We had brisket in Terlingua, too.
It was great!

Sounds like a good trip. That park is beautiful with all the different types of terrain there. Terlingua is a good time as well and a good day trip for lunch when in the park.
