Earlier this week some of you may have noticed a user blocked in the negative feedback as a result of wasting my time and another members. I got to thinking more about this and can't help but ask; what prevents these morons from just making a new account? Are mods banning the user account or the IP address? I'm not super computer savvy, and really just curious.

But we have had people come back before, yes?

Yes, there was one recently that got banned and tried at least twice more to log in.

Wasnt there a guy with Hulk as his avatar? He was found to be a previously banned person
Pip came back, too.

MR. BANNER (I think that's right) was Ric Flair.

The ultimate answer is that nothing prevents a user from coming back...or from making multiple sock-puppet accounts, for that matter.

I'm not a moderator here, but I've helped moderate another site. Being able to see IP addresses does help...but that, too, is not perfect. Not only can you actually have two or more different people at the same IP address (think family members, for example), but spoofing an IP address isn't at all difficult.

IP addresses can also be blocked. (At least this was a tool available when I moderated another site.) Again, spoofing an IP address can easily go around this.

However, behavioral patterns are a pretty good give away in making people say "Hmmm...this guy sure sounds familiar". When that happens, people watch and see what such accounts do...and if they fall into the same pattern as before, action can be taken. Being suspected of being a sock-puppet account, however, isn't usually enough...there typically has to be some independent behavior which justifies an administrative action by moderators. If a suspected sock-puppet account is otherwise following the site rules, nothing is done.

Again, keep in mind...I'm not a moderator on CFF and I won't presume to say they will not or cannot take any given action. However, in my experience what I've described above are some of the tools/limitations available and in general how reasonable moderating is undertaken.

We have a pretty good system of catching them. @amnesia does a great job of weeding them out. While a previously banned user gets in from time to time, a lot more are kept out than get back in

I think thos one got back in a couple of times. If Im not mistaken, he was Longmire, too
Nature Boi
Longmire
Mr Banner

Some folks get banned, come back and repeat their behavior and get rebanned, others have figured it out and have become good members of the community. I’ve often wondered if more aggressive use of 30 day timeouts for certain things wouldn’t be more effective than the system we have that is pretty binary, but not being a mod I figure they’ve considered and rejected the ideas based on info and experience that I lack.

In time, a banned member will reveal their identity via either the direction or language in their post, or they'll just admit it directly to a Staff member like ole Murphylong did one time.

For some, the ego trip alone is what they came for.

I somewhat agree with softening the perma-ban...

However, from being around here for a while I have realized that getting banned permanently really only happens in a few ways:

1. Breaking a deal: Shows lack of integrity. Keeping ones word is vital. It is also easy to maintain. Many of us have had things come up that would prevent a deal, and 99% of them can be mitigated through good communication which would prevent the issue all together. Even in some of the past few bans due to BST infractions I see how it would have been extremely easy for a member to have just sent a text saying "I am sorry, but something has come up today. I don't want you to waste your time, I still want to make good on the deal, can we change the date/time? Can I offer some earnest money through PayPal? What can I do to help make this right with you." The vast majority of bans due to BST infractions are due to no call/no show events. Not "something has come up, lets work together to make this right."

2. Racism/bigotry: While I think we have all seen some things slip through the cracks over the years, overt racism and bigotry cannot be tolerated. People are entitled to their opinions and feelings, but as a private forum the owners have an absolute right to squash this stuff when it rises up to protect the image and integrity of the forum.

3. Overwhelming douchbaggery: Theatening members, disrespect, language in non-nsfw forums, personal attacks, and the like.

So, in order to >really< get the perma-ban, you have had to go above and beyond in your attempts to become so. I have received time-outs way in the past, and in retrospect I earned each of them. I pushed the above #3 to its near breaking point. So I have seen exactly how lenient the mods can be.

We're adults here and I dont think timeouts are the answer. We're pretty vocal when someone crosses the bounds and we give them a slap on a the wrist. Then a mod will send a message to them explaining what the infraction is. We even do that a few more times before collectively we ask is this member someone who adds value to our site.

I once suggested that 18 years old might be too young for some people to carry concealed without any instruction and the reaction I got was so strong I thought I was going to have to close my account and start a new one.

I remember once on this forum or a prior one, the topic of shielding assets from a divorce came up. Someone created a new account, told us he was a regular on here, then told us how he did it.

Or post the same for sale picture in a BST ad as they did a previously banned account. Ima hound dog, I’ll find it if I see something I recognize

I'll also say for the ones who are reading this that have been previously banned but managed to sign back up. We know a few of you are still on here but you havent caused any trouble since the last ban so we haven't went inspector gadget on ya

Don't forget

4. Wife stalking...

I never would have guessed that Longmire was really Nature Boy...

I guess I'm just too trusting.
Folks had their suspicions, then one day Longmire posted a pistol for sale and used the same pic that he posted as nature boi when he bought the pistol.

Can’t disagree, the furthest I’ve gone down this road is to have a post or two deleted. In no case was the reason at all unclear or require explanation, and I’m just barely smart enough to know not to start a thread about how I was abused and how the rules aren’t sufficiently clear.

And for this^^^ I say...........................................Thank You.................

Now he is a moderator on csc

If anyone suspects a banned member has snuck back on the sight then have a moderator check him out. I did twice and the two offenders got the hammer again.
I suspect @kcult is a banned member. Investigate thoroughly.
