Alright, so I have 27 chickens brooding currently. My current coop will not support them and my 12 layers and 2 roosters.

For now it is going to be an 8'x8' and then I am going to add another 8 feet length wise.

Post in and did up my first 2x4 for my floor. measurement was correct, but level was off. Fixed that

Finished the other 3, Its mostly square only 1/2"ish off, and surprisingly level

Man. I try not to envy you fellahs. My neighborhood does not allow for this sort of thing. I have wanted some chickens and quail for a while. Not happening here . You are fortunate to be in a location where it is allowed.

It may be against bylaws, but EFF them.

My work in progress...

Are you under an HOA or something?

My birds free range at night we put em up and then they free range again.

I was giving my birds a couple of hours each afternoon and most of the day Saturday and Sunday, until a hawk figured out our schedule.

Now, they are in their run 24/7. :(

You need hawk repellent

I'm not too sure that my neighbors would really like my chickens roaming around too much. On top of that I also have a dozen homing pigeons in with the chickens so letting them free range is pretty much more hassle than it's worth.

Nope, but we had a neighbor with a pet goat they were using for milk to make cheese. The gated neighborhood on the opposite of their fence complained. Then we had a lady with chickens roaming around and she got annoyed by soemone about keeping her chickens in her yard. Apparently they were getting into flower beds and scratching for worms.

The funny thing is that right on Umstead road there is a guy with two very large pens with ducks, geese and chickens. He has been there for several years now. Not sure what his end goal is, but he is constantly knocking stuff over and rearranging the place. He has spent an enormous amount of money on farm equipment too. I think I will pay him a visit this spring.

Sounds like you are good to go then ☺.
We let our chickens range in the yard when we are around, and they only rarely go over our low fence. Hawks are a concern but, knock on wood, we haven't lost any to them.

Maybe I need to bring pizza by your house and have the wife in tow. Sh3 could see it is no big deal. She hasn't really been "excited about it" given we have an outside dog that chases every other living thing.

I would be glad to have you come over, even without pizza

We also have to keep our dog apart from the birds; I am not sure if we can train her out of chasing them, but we have only taken a baby step working on that so far...

You have my number... Drop me a line when you want to nail down a date. Saturday afternoons are usually the best bet for us.

Kinda off topic. Have any of you had ducks? Do they come in to the coop each night (like chickens)?

This mess is the 3rd outside project on my list as soon as we close on the new place.
Not sure if it was once a dog or maybe a goat pen. We will finalize plans after cleaning up the overgrowth but my current thought is to build a small roosting hut on the exterior or at least with access from the exterior.f1d8f3df5f30e56f97dabaded39dc343l-m21xd-w1020_h770_q80.jpg

If it's a goat pen I think it's ready. Enough food in there for a couple weeks.

Yes my ducks stay out later than the chickens but they go right in.....just have to train them.
Serious question...How?

If/when I get land, chickens and ducks are top of the list. I want probably 8-10 hens only...And a couple ducks. I've never had duck eggs...But hear they are tasty.

Food......... repeat..... Pretty easy to get them into a pattern.
Duh...Makes sense. I just didn't know if it was like how you can get a dog to go lay in their bed.
Yes..I'll admit I know nothing about chickens except they are tasty..Lol

As stated use food or other motivation to get them into a pattern......and yes duck eggs have a different taste /texture to them......best for baking /cooking......I love my eggs with runny yolks but not duck eggs.....it's just to much.

I finished mine a couple days ago, but have been sick and yet to get around to getting pictures of the final set up.

But d2id get the chickens moved in and everyone seems to be getting along

I labeled mine still a work in progress, and it is, but I need to switch my focus to some vehicles needing long overdue attention.

With that being said, I've learned a thing or two that may have saved me some time and money. With my design (that I kept tweaking as I went), I realized now that I almost didn't need coops as much as I needed simple nesting boxes. Instead of going in the coops each night, the birds found a single, exposed 2x4 in the ceiling of this thing and that's where they roost. The only thing they are using the coops for is to lay eggs and as a stepping stone to the 2x4 to roost.
