My car policy is for 3 cars, none are super nice cars. A '14 Passat, a '14 Suburban, and a '01 F350. My policies run 6 months and I'm a seasoned 53 year old driver, Jenny is 49. The last 2 renewal periods my rates have gone up 20-25%. No tickets, no points, no claims. Is this normal?

The insurance companies petition the NC Commissioner of Insurance to approve rate hikes based on whatever has befallen their companies or their industry for that time period, and the insurance commissioner either grants them or he doesn’t, so you are burdened with problems that are not of your own making, basically.

The first offense fine for not having insurance is only $50. I'm considering it and saving $700.

The good news is, if there is any in all of this...

This is a case, at least it has been in the past, where government regulation saved you money, because the insurance commissioner usually doesn’t grant what the insurance companies request in the way of an increase, at least he didn’t used to, and when I lived in SC a lifetime ago (that was less regulated at the time), my rates were always higher there than they were after I moved here.

ETA: I edited my post, because it didn’t make shart for sense the way I wrote it. Still might not. Mr. Jameson might be typing this message. AI’s got nothing on Mr. Jameson.

My car policy renewed for the same cost as the previous six month term. Travelers.

Ours went up so the wife started looking. Found the same policy numbers with progressive for 80 dollars cheaper than any one else. She also says it's not a bad company to work with on the work side.

Checked your homeowners recently? 😳

We had been with progressive and they suddenly jacked their rates up so severely one year, my agent called and said, “don’t pay that, we’re switching you”. And he did. Claimed progressive said it was a “market rate adjustment” and we were still in their preferred category. Switched to Utica (out of NY) which treated us very well for over a decade until we switched to Erie and saved money. PM inbound with an agent suggestion.

Friend just paid a $3k fine for not having insurance for about 9 months n NC, claims first offense. I can’t explain the amount.

Nationwide also did the same thing to me. I switched to Erie and got more coverage along with a $1m umbrella for about half of what I was paying Nationwide.

We use Whitley Reavis by Mossy's in Clemmons and have Erie, ours just went down this renewal in June. I recommend checking them out. Erie just approved a new roof for us from the hail damage about a month ago too.

Another Erie customer. Saved like $1k from what Liberty Mutual wanted on house, 2 late model Mercedes cars, and added an umbrella policy.

In my opinion, when it comes to the subject of insurance, a good agent is the key factor.

The fine if you get a ticket may only be $50 but you also have to pay a civil fine when you go to renew your tags. Mine lapsed years ago and I think it was $500 extra I had to pay when I renewed my tags. This was over 10 years ago I may be off on the amount but it wasn’t cheap.

If you own a home or have equity in one, without car insurance you are risking loss if you cause an accident.

Over the last few years ours seems to go up $20-40 per year. We have 2 with full coverage and one with liability and comprehensive only, no sports cars and only 1 of the 2 with full coverage has any significant value. IIRC it jumped almost $100 this year, which was about 15% .
